Ben’s weekly Newsletter πŸ’”

We’ve some sad news to share with you, but we hope that you’ll understand.

We have decided to close our veg box scheme, with our last deliveries on 21st and 22nd July, and concentrate our efforts on developing our Bingley shop.

With ever increasing costs, it has become a lot harder for independent businesses to run a profitable veg box delivery service without scaling up significantly. We have looked hard at that option but concluded it is just not viable for us.

It's a hard decision because it has been so rewarding to be able to offer the service, particularly to those of you who struggle to get to our shop. We don’t want to abandon you, so we have decided to offer all our active veg box customers a 10% discount loyalty card for use in the shop for three months once we close the veg box scheme, and we will be extending our opening hours to help some of you to access the shop more easily. We’ll let you know about extended hours and obtaining your loyalty card in the coming weeks.

We’re also looking into how we might continue providing a limited grocery delivery service in the future. Please let us know your thoughts and we’ll be back in touch with everyone when we have more details.

Thank you for trusting us and sticking with us for your veg boxes, some of you for a few years now. It has been good to get to know you (and your children and pets) on your doorsteps! We really hope you’ll be able to get in to see us at the shop.

Finally, for those of you who appreciate the newsletter content, we'll keep that going in some form. Again, more details to follow when we have them.

In the meantime, here are the box contents this week:

🀘❀️ On Thursday night, Maria, Ben, Britta and Zoe went out-out to watch , whose lead singer happens to be our lovely colleague Becca!

We’re pretty sure Sheffield’s Foundry has been searching for its roof ever since β€” our girl absolutely blew it off with her astonishing vocals!

To see sweet Becca standing on stage, strong, fearless and resilient, sharing a message of kindness and love through her powerful music with such passion, left us in awe. This girl is incredible, and we couldn’t be prouder of her. ❀️

Marmozets recently released their long-awaited third album, CO.WAR.DICE., and are currently touring the UK. If you get the chance to see them live, grab it with both hands β€” they are awesome!

πŸ–ΌοΈ Introducing our second Young Artist of the Month: Blake Foster!

Blake is 9 years old. He loves spending time in nature and slowing down to look at the small details which help inspire his work. 🐞🌿

He loves to draw on the go and usually has his notebook ready to sketch plants and to draw pictures for friends.

Alongside inspiration from the world around him, Blake uses his own inventive imagination to bring unique characters and creative worlds to life.

We’re delighted to be showcasing not one, but two incredible Young Artists of the Month this June! 🎨✨

Do you know a talented artist under 18? We’d love to hear from them. Our little gallery has both display walls available from July, giving young creatives a fantastic opportunity to share their work with our community. ❀️

πŸ–ΌοΈ Introducing our Young Artist of the Month: Elsie Carter!

Elsie is 14 years old and has a wonderful eye for nature and detail. From delicate floral designs created with fine liners to beautifully observed pencil drawings of wildlife and her beloved cat, Bob, her artwork shows patience, creativity and real talent.

We're delighted to be showcasing Elsie's work in the shop this month.

🐾 Elsie is also available for pet portrait commissions, so if you'd like a special drawing of your darling pet, pop in and ask for details.

Ben’s Weekly Hogletter:

β˜€οΈ Is the heatwave over? With a week of rain and somewhat lower temperatures forecast, perhaps we’ll be craving some more hearty cooked dishes, and parking the salads for now?

All boxes have courgette, yellow pepper, mushroom and some UK coriander this week. All except Mixed boxes add red and yellow chillies and an aubergine, so I predict some mighty trays of roasted veg. If you have a lemon or lime and/or a vinegar, some garlic and some olive oil kicking about, may I suggest this variation on a chimichurri to drizzle over?

Coriander & chilli β€˜chimichurri’ drizzle

Handful of coriander 🌿 , roughly chopped
1 or 2 chillies 🌢️
1 clove garlic πŸ§„
Juice of Β½ lemon πŸ‹ or a lime πŸ‹β€πŸŸ©(or a splash of cider, wine 🍷 or fruit vinegar)
4–5 tbsp olive oil πŸ«’
Pinch of salt
Blitz or finely chop everything together and spoon over the hot roasted vegetables.

And everyone will get a local lettuce too – either Lollo Rosso or Gem – from Meanwood Valley Urban Farm (MVUF).

We collect produce from the 1 acre market garden at MVUF on our way to Leeds Bread Co-op and always enjoy the vibe while we are there. Their main building – the Epicentre – is used for exhibition space, classrooms, meeting facilities, offices, a library and is the central focus for the learning and inspiration of the Farm’s aims. It is a striking sustainable build based around the Walter Segal timber frame method. First opened in 1999, it now needs some urgent repairs to reinforce some timbers and has had to close until they raise the funds.

The Epicentre is where their HOOF team are usually based. HOOF (Helping On Our Farm) is an outdoor-based social care project for adults with learning disabilities and autism. Since the closure of the Epicentre they have had to move to a different, smaller farm building causing significant disruption to their daily routines.

The Epicentre is also used as a hub of education as they host local schools that come and learn on their green site. With the closure of the building, they have had to postpone or cancel many school visits.

The continued closure of the Epicentre means MVUF are missing out on essential income as they usually have regular room bookings from local groups and organisations. Additionally, their front desk and gift shop are both based in the building and visitor admissions and shop purchases are an essential part of farm income.

It is essential that they can repair and re-open the Epicentre as soon as possible and all donations, large or small will be very much appreciated.

You can read more about MVUF here πŸ‘‡https://www.mvuf.org.uk/

If you are able, please contribute to their Crowdfunder here: πŸ‘‰ https://www.crowdfunder.co.uk/p/support-urgent-repairs-to-our-epicentre

Just made my first batch of apricot jam with apricots from Hedgehog Organics πŸ˜‹ Apricots Β£8.49/kg and I used 1.8kg for my 9 jars. With organic sugar, a lemon, and half an hour or so of leccy that works out about Β£2.50/jar. However, I don’t have enough jars for batch 2. Has anyone got any spares I can collect please, or that you can drop off at Hedgehog Organics?

I was outraged. Part of the joy of jam is cleaning, sterilising and reusing manky old jars!

We celebrated our first wedding anniversary yesterday! ❀️

Friends, sunshine, a picnic in Hebden Bridge Park (where we had our first kiss years ago) and some very serious tiramisu research.

We can confirm that the new homemade tiramisu pots from local Homebakd have passed our rigorous testing procedures* πŸ˜‹
