🌱💚 THAT’S A WRAP ON THE GROWING SEASON! 💚🌱

As we start putting the garden to bed for winter, we want to say a huge THANK YOU to everyone who supported Raven Roots Farm this season!

From our Thursday farmers’ markets to pop-up events, on-farm sales, bulk orders and U-Pick, it’s been wonderful seeing so many people choosing to support locally grown food. We’ve loved seeing familiar faces return each week and meeting new customers along the way. 🥕🥔🍅

Farming certainly keeps you on your toes! Between the unpredictable weather, long harvest days and an early frost, this season had its challenges. But it also brought some incredible market days, sold-out tables and plenty of moments that made all the hard work worth it.

Now it’s time for us to get the garden tilled in and the farm ready for winter. We’ll be taking a breath, reflecting on the season and starting to plan for next year. 🌱

Want to get your hands dirty and take home some freshly harvested carrots? For the next week, we’re offering U-pick carrots for just $2.50/lb! 🥕💚

Bring your elbow grease and a crate or box to transport your carrots home! We’ll provide the shovels and bins for harvesting. 🧑‍🌾

Enjoy the fresh air, beautiful mountain views and a little time out in the garden while you harvest your own carrots!

Raven Roots Farm will be set up as a vendor at Pumpkin Fest next Saturday, September 26th!

We’ll be bringing along a selection of our fresh, locally grown produce straight from the farm. 🥕🥬🥦

There’s a ton happening throughout the day: you-pick pumpkins, hay rides, kids’ games, local vendors, food, face painting, balloon animals and more. It sounds like such a fun fall day for the whole family! 🍁

Today is market day, and we are bringing one of our biggest selections of the season!

For the first time this year, we’ll have freshly harvested potatoes, pumpkins AND acorn squash joining the Raven Roots lineup! 🎃🥔

❄️ Well… the frost arrived a little earlier than expected. ❄️

On Friday, we shared that Raven Roots wouldn’t be setting up our Saturday veggie stand so we could spend the day preparing the farm for the below-zero temperatures forecast for Saturday night.

Unfortunately, Mother Nature had other plans. We woke up Saturday morning to -3°C and one very heavily frosted farm (and again Sunday morning).

Frost can look pretty beautiful, especially on mornings like this. But for a small vegetable farm, a hard frost can change things incredibly quickly. Some crops, like kale, cabbage, and our root vegetables, can handle the cold remarkably well. Others aren’t nearly so lucky.

Our zucchini, pumpkins and winter squash took a hard hit. We had thankfully done a bit of a test the night before and covered a few rows, and thankfully SOME SURVIVED! The pumpkins and squash have been harvested and moved into our seed starting house. Over the next few days we’ll be sorting through everything, watching for frost damage and figuring out what can be sold at the last two markets.

This is one of those parts of farming that customers don’t always get to see. Months of planting, watering, weeding, harvesting and tending a crop can change in one cold night. You can watch the forecast, make plans and think you still have another day, and then wake up to a frozen landscape.

Despite our disappointment, we are happy to share that we still have LOTS of veggies to bring to our last 2 farmers’ markets!!!

Carrots, tomatoes, potatoes, cabbage, beets, lettuce, kale, Swiss chard, green onions, along with some zucchini, acorn squash and pumpkin.
