Today, our neighbours to the south observe "Memorial Day" - and as a proud Canadian living in Toronto, it's a perfect moment to reflect on how deeply our two nations share the same spirit of honoring those who sacrificed everything for our freedom.

Here's what many people don't realize:

USA — MEMORIAL DAY (Last Monday of May)

A solemn national day dedicated specifically to the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. Armed Forces. At 3:00 PM today, Americans pause for a National Moment of Remembrance — two minutes of silence for the fallen.

CANADA — REMEMBRANCE DAY (November 11)

Canada's most solemn national observance — held every year on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month — the exact moment the WWI armistice took effect in 1918. Canadians observe two minutes of silence at 11:00 AM, lay wreaths at war memorials, and wear the iconic "red poppy" — a symbol drawn from Lt. Col. John McCrae's poem In Flanders Fields, written on a Canadian battlefield.
