My late father, Mohammed Abdul Wahed, built a community in Toronto back in 2001, long before Danforth became the "Bangladeshi para". As the founder of Marhaba Supermarket, he created more than a place to shop. He created a gathering point for newcomers who needed a familiar smile, a taste of home, and a reminder that they belonged. I was called the "Marhaba girl" growing up as I helped him build his store from scratch. And as someone like me who was not born in Bangladesh, I grew to love Bangladesh, our language and our underrated Bangladeshi cuisine! Trust me, my Bangla is good! 🤣

Now here I am in Calgary, trying to continue that rhythm in my own way. The cooking classes (50+ cooking classes!), the cultural storytelling, the passion for building my own "para" through our Bangladeshi food, it’s all rooted in the same intention he carried: serve people, feed people, and uplift people. I have been serving non-Bengalis for the past 2 years as a Bangladeshi host, and sharing my love for our food and culture. They love our bhortas! We Bengalis sure know how to make our guests feel 😁

Every step I take feels connected to the work he started. Today marks exactly 3 years since we lost him.
