FOOD FOR THOUGHT

Let's fill up our plates! How we approach our meals has plenty of influence on our digestion, our relationship with food and our overall health. It is often overlooked when it comes to changes you can make that can affect your diet.

One thing I notice often is when someone makes a radical change to a very restrictive or highly regulated diet structure, they notice some big changes right away. While I realize, as I often say, "We are all Unicorns", and different eating styles work differently for each individual, there is a common thread here that can be making the BIGGEST of improvements to your health! You are attempting an entirely NEW style of eating, which almost always means you have cut out a LOT of convenience and Ultra-Processed foods. Usually meaning you need to do a lot more cooking from scratch to keep with the new plan! More scrutiny paid to the ingredients, nutrition density and overall quality of the foods you are eating is always going to yield better results! You could just start there first, without as many of the restrictions.

Another habit that can give great results is HOW you are eating. Slowing down while eating meals and approaching your plate with Hara hachi bu (Japanese saying meaning eating until ~80% full) or "Am I satisfied?" (the French approach as opposed to North America - "Are you full?), will mean the 20min it takes your stomach to tell your brain that you have eaten enough will get there before you overeat and are now uncomfortable.

We also tend to eat a bit slower and chew a little longer when we are in company with others around a table, even if it's just our own family. Eating at a table, with no other distractions (other than our dinner mates) has been shown in studies, in general, to have wonderful impacts on meal satisfaction and better relationships with food. There have even been studies done when people are eating alone, but at a proper table vs in front of a screen, with similar results. It may mean actually scheduling in mealtimes, but it's a dietary change you can try that is entirely FREE!

I have put together some options to create a nice little Welcome Package, so your Guests are greeted by a partially stocked pantry/fridge when they arrive. Having this add-on option to their rental can create a little less friction in their stay and make YOU look like the SuperStar🌟!!

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

Digestive Enzymes? Don't we make those ourselves?

We sure do, but sometimes, the body may need a little help. When to use them and how to choose what may be right for your situation are where the nuances lie. As most of you know, I am a BIG fan of helping the body do what it was designed to do, but everyone is different, so the approach has to match the person!

I have a really cute print in the store from Nick Seluk that shows all the different organs in the body as cartoon personalities. The Gall Bladder is a little green guy who just wants to help. For us to digest efficiently (and I always say humans were built to be nothing if not efficient), the liver prepares gastric fluids in advance, and the gallbladder holds them until it gets the signal to release them for use.

When gallbladder function is impaired (gallstones for example), or it has been removed, the body will need some help filling the gap. This is an excellent situation where Digestive Enzymes shine (especially ones that contain Ox Bile).

Alternately, digestive bitters can help when the concern may not specifically be the gallbladder. Other digestive issues that seem less severe can still cause big problems...and can eventually lead to Gall Bladder issues if left unaddressed. So, an ounce of prevention is DEFINITELY worth a pound of cure in this case! Including issues like:
πŸ‘‰ Sluggish digestion, also called "functional dyspepsia."
πŸ‘‰ Low Stomach Acid (Hypochlorhydria): antacids are usually suggested for this (and rarely help the cause), since it is the main culprit for Indigestion, Acid Reflux, even GERD

Digestive Bitters: take 20-30min before the meal, but you can also take after a meal (they will still help if not as dramatically).
