Happy National Corn on the Cob Day!🌽
Today we're celebrating one of Ontario's most beloved summer crops while also recognizing June as National Indigenous History Month and the deep agricultural knowledge that has shaped our region for generations.
Long before modern farming, Indigenous peoples across Ontario cultivated corn as part of the traditional Three Sisters planting method, which involves growing corn, beans, and squash together in a sustainable partnership.
The corn provides a natural trellis for the beans, the beans enrich the soil with nutrients, and the squash shades the ground to help retain moisture and suppress weeds.🌽🫛
Corn has been an important food source, cultural staple, and community crop for countless generations. As we enjoy fresh local corn this season, we honour the wisdom, stewardship, and agricultural traditions of the Indigenous peoples who have cared for these lands and shared knowledge of growing and gathering these essential crops, both historically and today.
At the Horton Farmers’ Market, we acknowledge that we are on the traditional territory of the Haudenosaunee, Anishinaabe, and Lenape Peoples. We invite our market community to learn, listen, and support Indigenous growers, makers, and educators because food is not just nourishment; it’s a powerful link to heritage and healing. 🧺🌿
