Sunday Series: Seed Saving
It's still seed harvest season! Knowing when to harvest for seed is all dependent on what type of plant you’re looking at.
đź«› With seeds contained within pods (e.g. bean, pea) you want to leave the pods on the plant until they become dry, and remove the seeds from within.
🍅 With seeds contained within wet fruits (e.g. tomato, pepper), you can harvest when the fruit is nice and ripe, and remove the seeds from within.
🥬 With seeds found in “seed heads” (e.g. lettuce, basil), you’ll want to leave the seed heads on the plant until they become dry, then remove the heads and/or individual seeds.
And here are some other best practices to keep in mind when you’re ready to harvest:
🌱 Save seeds from your healthiest, most productive plants
🌱 Harvest on a dry, sunny day if possible
🌱 Understand what comes next in the process - cleaning and/or drying, depending on the species
