I just want to highlight one of our sellers, Heather Smyth, who owns One Stitch. Heather makes up-cycled mittens and wool socks. Not only will she be selling them at our market on Sunday, but she will be bringing her Circular Sock Machine to demonstrate how she does this. She told me the most fantastic story that I want to share here. I highly encourage you to come out on Sunday to see Heather in action!

A Circular Sock Machine (CSM) knits fabric tubes, including socks, by turning a hand crank or pedal. During WWI and WWII, women used CSMs to knit socks for soldiers as part of the war effort. The Red Cross provided machines and wool, challenging women to knit 30 pairs in 30 days. Successful knitters kept the machines; others passed them on. These machines were life-changing in the early 1900s, saving time and offering income opportunities. Wool socks were vital for soldiers, with many crediting them for helping prevent trench foot and even contributing to wartime success.

I found it incredibly impactful and eye-opening to learn how these machines not only supported soldiers but also empowered women in such a profound way. The connection between something as simple as wool socks and their life-saving impact on soldiers is both moving and humbling. It has deepened my appreciation for the craft and the rich history behind it. Thank you again for sharing this story, Heather Smyth!
