Just look at that fuzzy green carpet. This is where cheese begins! 🌱

Last month we turned over many of our older grass stands for reseeding, and we're happy to see some good germination.

After a dry harvest this year, we're especially excited to refresh these fields and hopefully produce more and better grass in the seasons ahead!

It's like lying on a beach 🏖️

These stalls are our cow’s beds, where they go to rest for 10-14 hours a day. We use sand bedding in these stalls, which we replenish regularly to maintain a healthy and comfortable environment for our cows. But what makes sand the 'gold standard' for bedding on dairy farms?

🐮 It’s comfortable. Think of it as lying on a sandy beach: in the same way, dry sand is soft and conforms to the cow’s body. It provides cushioning, relieves joint stress, and offers superior traction.

🐮 It drains well. Cows ‘go’ wherever nature calls so using bedding that doesn’t retain moisture is important.

🐮 It’s hygienic. Sand offers an environment naturally low in bacteria, reducing the risk of infections such as mastitis.

🧑‍🌾 Access to sand, coupled with the design of the barn, make it a practical choice.

Local jam + local cheese!

You know that bright, vibrant taste of homemade jams? Well, the next best thing is small-batch preserves like these, where simple ingredients result in good flavour.

Mrs. Jones Jams are handmade in the Cowichan Valley, using local fruit where possible. We're particularly fond of the blueberry lemon, strawberry vanilla (with natural fromage frais!!) and the roast garlic jelly.

The smaller sizes are available packed up in gift boxes of two or three. Find them in the pantry section at the farm store!

Help us name these two handsome fellas! 🐰

You may have noticed a few changes around the rabbit enclosure. The hutch sat empty for a few months after losing our Honey bunny, and while we waited for a couple buns in need of a home, their space got a colourful refresh. 🌈

Just this week, two new rabbits arrived to join the farm fam! They’re already settling in, but need a little more time to adjust to their new home. The rabbit enclosure will probably be closed at least another couple days while they get comfortable, but you can still say hello from outside.

In the meantime, drop your name ideas in the comments! 🐰

They should be called Cookies & Cream... 🍪🥛

But these beauties are a Speckle Park Crossover, a three-way mix with Canadian roots. 🇨🇦

The breed was developed in Saskatchewan beginning in 1959 by cross-breeding Aberdeen Angus, Teeswater Shorthorn and British White-patterned English cattle. Their signature speckled look traces back to a distinctive white-pointed bull.

Speckle Park is the first and only beef breed developed in Saskatchewan.

There's a little piece of Canadian cattle history for you!
