Mark 12.18-27
YOU NEITHER UNDERSTAND THE SCRIPTURE NOR THE POWER OF GOD
*It is very easy to doubt what we do not understand. Many people doubted the possibility of flights. We doubt things based on what we know. Unfortunately, our knowledge is limited. We do not even know how limited our knowledge is. We do not know what we do not know. The people who came to Jesus with the question about resurrection believe they have figured it out based on their logic. Their reason for doubting resurrection is based on marriage, they were worried about how seven brothers would share one wife after resurrection as if that is the major problem about rising from the dead. We see similar thing with people who bury their kings with servants who would be serving the king in the other world. They do not even know if their king will recognise his servants in that other world. Perception of reality is different from the reality, wrong perception can keep us in the wrong and blind us to the truth. This applies to even understanding the scriptures, the power of God and spiritual things. A negative person will always views things from negative angle, a selfish will equally perceive things from selfish angle. We are always tempted to look at spiritual things from our physical understanding and approach to things. The only thing that was bothering the Sadducee concerning the resurrection of the dead was how to share a woman who had been married by seven brothers. Jesus told them, ‘you understand neither the scriptures nor the power of God. It is difficult to say how the reality beyond death really is, most of what we know are in symbols and figurative speeches. This is more reason for us to strive to grow spiritually, only the Spirit can interpret and understand spiritual things. Looking at the spiritual realities with our carnal senses will only prepare us for unimaginable surprises and disappointments. May the Lord help us to understand and believe the spiritual realities beyond our physical world through Christ our Lord Amen.*

Mark 12.13-17
WHY DO YOU SET THIS TRAP FOR ME
*The Chief priests and the Scribes came to Jesus with a very troubling question. They started by praising Jesus, ‘Master, we know you are an honest man….’, they said. One would have thought they meant good, but in reality, they had only come to set Jesus up for failure. In His wisdom and deep insight, Jesus was able to see through their deception and did not fall into their trap. Yet, this is very important to note that not every time people say good things that they mean it. People can flatter you with lies while setting you up and waiting for you to fail. If Jesus had been a man of vanity, He would have been carried away by the praise and sweet talk of these wicked minded people, He might only realise His errors when they had finished dealing with Him. Self control is very important, being vigilant to know when we are being set up for failure. The temptations that often come our ways come in form of seductions, they often seem harmless at the beginning, yet, they might be full of danger. When the serpent came to Eve in the garden of Eden, it came with a mere question; “did God really say you must not eat from any tree in the garden….’” In the case of Jesus they asked him; ‘is it permissible to pay tax to Caesar or not? Should we pay, yes or no? They even suggested answers for him to choose from. That was the trap. Jesus responded to the people with wisdom and they were disappointed, may God give us the wisdom and insight to overwhelm and disappoint those who set traps for us through Christ our Lord. Amen.*

THE STONE REJECTED BY THE BUILDERS
*Apart from fear of death, fear of failure and rejection are among the greatest fears of man. No one likes to be rejected or turned down. There are some people who cannot withstand rejection for once, if they feel they will be rejected, they will not even try at all. Jesus is teaching us to be courageous and persistent. He was rejected by the chief priests, the Scribes and the Elders. Yet, he was never disturbed about their rejection. He did not equally reject himself, he did not change his focus to please the Chief priests, the Scribes and the Elders who rejected him. He accepted himself and God’s purpose for him. Those who conquer fear of failure and rejection become masters of other negative emotions. Many great inventions and breakthrough were accomplished by people who never allowed the fear of rejection and failure to stop them. Jesus is telling us that many cornerstones have to first endure being rejected stones. The rejections and failures of our lives are not the definitions of our lives. If we believe in what the Lord can do and put our faith to action, it does not matter how many times we are rejected, we are being fashioned into cornerstones. If Jesus Who is the Chief Cornerstone was rejected, what about us? The possibility of becoming a cornerstone depends on our readiness and ability to withstand the rejections of the builders while depending on the Master Builder to build us up. May the Lord grant us doggedness, the grind and grit to withstand the rigours and pains of rejections until the cornerstones in us are revealed in Jesus name Amen.*

The Most Holy Trinity Sunday

(Exodus 34.4-6,8-9, 2 Corinthians 13.11-13, John 3.16-18)

GOD LOVES THE WORLD SO MUCH….

One of the greatest gifts of God to man is the ability to know. Human beings can increase in knowledge, we do not just know, we know that we know. This means that we are beings of higher consciousness. This is why we can write history and even learn from what is happening in other parts of the world that we do not know first-hand. This is even deeper because we possess language that is higher than that of other creatures. Imagine what will happen if animals can communicate like we do, a typical example is what happened in the famous book written by George Orwell (Animal Farm) where the animals wanted to deal with human beings. I often marvel at the ability of human beings to tame and control animals like elephant and even lions. There is a circus show where a man performed with trained tigers, imagine if those tigers changed their minds and decide to do something crazy….

This gift and ability to know and seek knowledge can equally bring other challenges, it equally gives us the ability to doubt and challenge what we know and what we do not know yet. It can equally make us impose our own ideas on what we do not know. It can equally make us think that we know it all or that only the things we know exist. A philosopher said that man is the measure of all reality; of what is, that it is, and of what is not, that it is not. How can man be the measure of all reality? Yes, human beings occupy a high position among all the things that are created, but the truth is; human beings did not put themselves on the top of all creation. David in his Psalm acknowledged this (Psalm 8.1-5).

It is good that today being Trinity Sunday that we should reflect on the love of God. Moses encountered God on the mountain of Sinai. God passed by him and proclaimed Himself a God of tenderness and compassion, slow to anger and rich in kindness and faithfulness. Moses worshipped and prayed to God to journey with him and his people Israel despite their stubbornness. In the second reading, Paul greeted the Corinthians with the GRACE of our Lord Jesus Christ, the LOVE of God and the FELLOWSHIP of the Holy Spirit. In this greetings, Paul demonstrated the reality of the Trinity of love, grace and mercy. In the gospel, Jesus made it very clear that God loves the world SO MUCH!

Our Catechism tells us that God created us to know Him, love Him, serve Him in this world and be happy with Him in the next. God wants us to know the truth about Him. We were not born with all the knowledge about God and the world, we have to learn these from childhood. This knowing involves a relationship whereby we are introduced into a religion with certain teachings and ideas about God. Yet, we can hardly say that anyone has gotten full knowledge of God. The disciples of Jesus who met him in the flesh wanted him to show them the Father, but Jesus told them that seeing him is seeing the Father (John 14.9). Despite the fact that the Jews have been in relationship with God for ages, Jesus made it clear that they do not know the Father (Matthew 11.27, John 1.18, John 6.46). However, God has revealed a lot of things about Himself just like He did with Moses in the first reading of today. We can equally say a lot about God based on the works of His hand (Psalm 19.1, Romans 1.19-21).

The knowledge we have about God is not the same as other knowledge; no one has seen God and no one can say how God looks. We equally do not know where God is though our Catechism tells us that He is everywhere. This is knowledge of faith because we still ask God ‘where are You?’ when we face difficult challenges. Faith is the foundation of our relationship with God and it is impossible to please God without faith (Hebrews 11.6). The light of faith gives us access to knowledge that the senses cannot perceive. Though we rely a lot on our senses to understand and perceive the reality, yet, there are certain realities that require something more reliable than the senses. As a matter of fact, too much reliance on the senses will limit our ability to know the truth. The senses are only meant to assist the mind and the interpretations we give to the things we perceive with our senses depends on how deep or shallow our minds are.

Faith is not gullibility; faith does not mean we should not question things. In fact, faith should guide us and make us question, research, investigate, examine, and to seek more knowledge and wisdom into all things. Opposite of faith is not doubt, opposite of faith is fear. There are people who present fear and timidity as faith; they become puppets and refuse to utilize the abilities God gave them to think, create, develop and advance. God did not give us a spirit of timidity but of boldness and SOUND MIND (2 Timothy 1.7). However, one of the greatest aspect of knowledge is self-awareness. A wise man said; ‘man know thyself.’ Lack of authentic self-knowledge can lead to presumption, vanity and folly. The greatest deception should be self-deception. True self knowledge is a great step towards true knowledge of God because He lives in us and we are created in His image and likeness.

The mystery of the Trinity calls us to appreciate the love of God. This mystery demonstrates that God’s greatness did not prevent Him from coming down to His creature in a manner too deep to understand. This is why the Incarnation remains a great mystery; that the Creator took our human flesh and was born in the cold and poverty of human situation. We just ended the celebration of the Paschal mystery during the Easter period which ended with celebration of the coming of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is the greatest gift of God for His love has no end. Jesus called Him the Advocate, the Helper, the Spirit of Truth and the One Who will lead us to all truth. Jesus is the image of the Unseen God, in Him God moved among humans and revealed His grace. We saw him, touched him and ate with him (1 John 1.1).

This mystery of Trinity calls us to equally imitate God in His love and generosity. Jesus loved us as the Father has loved Him and sent us into the world as the Father had sent him (John 15.9, John 20.21). He wants us to remain in this love. He wants us love one another. Love is the trade mark of Christianity (John 13.35). We are human beings born with weaknesses and brokenness. Yet, we have received the gift of God, we have received the Spirit of God that makes us cry Abba-Father! Let us renew our love of God poured into our hearts, let us live out this vocation of love in our daily lives, let us renew our faith in the loving God Who is always faithful. It will not always be easy, but God wants to help us and He is always ready to supply the strength we need to grow, develop and mature in His love. May the Trinity of love bless us in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Mark 11.11-26
MAY NO ONE EVER EAT FRUIT FROM YOU AGAIN
Jesus cursed a fig tree because He could not find any fruit on it. We could ask why Jesus should curse? This story is one on its own, we can hardly see any other signs and wonders of Jesus that has to do with this type of cursing. After this incident, He equally got to the Temple and was angry with the people selling and buying, He drove them away, He did not curse them. Jesus teaches us restrain, very often, we use our powers negatively to bully and pull each other down. We equally pull ourselves down through negative mindsets, fear and doubts. We find it difficult to handle our authority and positions of power. We have situations where seemingly humble people after being elected to the positions of power turn into tigers immediately crushing and suppressing anyone who dares to stand in their ways. The only fault of this fig tree was that it showed much leaves without having any fruit, that was deception. Deception is a very bad thing, devils and demons are masters of deceptions and lies. Deception is a means of sabotage and destruction. Jesus would not want the fig tree to continue deceiving people. But it was more about teaching His disciple the power of faith. He told them when they expressed surprise that they too can move mountains with their faith. The same way faith can move mountains, doubts and fear can build mountains. If we nurture our fears and doubts, they would become great obstacles to our growth and maturity, they will become great saboteurs to our mission. We must learn to nurture faith, courage and trust in God. We must equally learn to use our powers to do more of building, blessing, protecting, defending, healing and empowering instead of cursing and destroying. Jesus remains our model, He hardly used His powers in a negative way, we too should do the same. May the holy Spirit enable us to be full of faith and power for building and healing the broken world through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Mark 10.32-45
SON OF MAN DID NOT COME TO BE SERVED
*Jesus cautioned His disciples as they were busy fighting for places of authority around Him. The irony was that this was happening when Jesus was still telling them about the things He would suffer from the people. This sensitive and solemn time was meant to let them be sober about their mission, but being engrossed in their personal interests and ambitions, they were blinded to the reality, they could not perceive the challenge and responsibility that their choice had laid on them. The truth is that they were never aware of the level of service Jesus was about to render for the sake of humanity. They were never prepared to face the reality of Jesus being killed let alone in a shameful way, Peter even rebuked Jesus for saying it(Matthew 16.22). Peter told Jesus, ‘stop talking like, God would never allow this happen to you…’. You can understand why they never paid attention to what Jesus was saying. God delights in serving humanity, God laboured for His creatures, He created and ordered the world without even calling us to assist, He came as a Man and toiled not as a King but as a servant. Religion is God serving humanity in love. This is why God resists the proud and could not abide in folly. Jesus served us even unto death , He emptied Himself. Self emptying can be very demanding, but it is only when we empty ourselves that we can be filled with the Spirit of God, the Spirit of service. Any religion and spirituality that is built and guided by self service is ungodly. Jesus made it very clear to His disciples, ‘it should not be so among you’. The best way to serve God is to serve those He created, to value those He created, to nurture and uphold the dignity of God’s creatures. We cannot exalt God by destroying the dignity of His creation; when Peter told Jesus that he loved Him, Jesus added, ‘feed my sheep’, not ‘feed on my sheep’. We are called to learn how to love and serve each other, to empty ourselves, to train and discipline the impulse and selfish ego in order to bear fruits. May the grace and wisdom of the Holy Spirit support and guide us as strive to become better through Christ our Lord. Amen.*

Week 8 Ordinary Time.
Mark 10.28-31.
WHAT ABOUT US? PETER ASKED JESUS.
*It is often said that when you tell a child what it takes to be rich, he would prefer to remain poor. This is often because we do not want to pay the price of the things we want. We want to take the short cut, we want the gain without the pain. We want to reach the destination without taking the path. The truth is that the journey is part of the destination. Getting rich is not just about getting money, it is about the experience, the hard work, the sacrifice, the commitment, the disappointments, the risks, all these are part of the wealth. The same goes for any other endeavor. This is why is a big crime to train children with examination malpractices, children who get high scores without studying have missed a great lesson in success, they are likely to continue seeking victory through a foul means, they would want to buy their way into anything, foundation once destroyed, even the just cannot do anything (Psalm 11.3). When Jesus raised the standard of the kingdom, many were frightened; the rich man went home sad and disappointed. Peter said, ‘if it was like that, then no one would be saved.’ Jesus replied, ‘for man it is impossible, but with God all things are possible.’ In today’s gospel, Peter wanted to be sure that they have not wasted their time following Jesus and he asked, ‘what about us, we have left everything to follow you,’ Jesus gave them 100 percent assurance that rewards for leaving everything is very sure. These two cases show us that the kingdom of God is not easy, grace of God alone can make it possible, but leaving everything behind is our job. The struggle, the grind, grit, fight, determination, from us is as important as the grace of God, if not, the rich man would not have gone home sad and disappointed. He lacked the courage and will power to leave everything behind. Grace of God is available to all who are ready to risk it all for the kingdom. May God still grant us more grace and character to work out our salvation with holy fear and courage through Christ our Lord. Amen.*

Week 8 in Ordinary Time.
Mark 10.17-27
WHAT MUST I DO TO INHERIT ETERNAL LIFE?
*The questions in our minds are the indications of what we value. Our minds are made in such a way that we get answers when we seek them. Asking questions requires us to ask the right questions, to ask insistently and persistently. Many people approached Jesus with different kinds of questions, the man who approached him today was interested in something many people do not care about. The topic of the question and how he asked it showed that it had occupied mind for along. He was not asking for something temporary, he was asking for eternal life. His question shows he was ready to take action and do something. He equally wanted to know the price he needed to pay. This is a question of necessity. If you really want to achieve anything worthwhile, you must raise the necessity. The necessity factor makes you creative, inventive, innovative, committed and consistent. This is the difference between the man who comes to work early and leaves late and the one who comes late and leaves early. Many of us fall short in life because we make our pursuits an option not a necessity. We are contented and comfortable with average. We see many people we are better than and feel there’s nothing more to aspire to. When the man in the gospel asked Jesus ‘what must I do to inherit heaven?’ He was simply expressing the necessity factor, he really wanted to make heaven, he wanted to know the WIT(whatever it takes) of heaven. Most times people realize the necessity factor when it is already late, they become desperate and even lose hope. May God give us the grace to raise the necessity factor of eternal life and excellence in our life and the character to pursue it with passion, energy and commitment through Christ our Lord. Amen.*
