The Most Holy Trinity Sunday
(Exodus 34.4-6,8-9, 2 Corinthians 13.11-13, John 3.16-18)
GOD LOVES THE WORLD SO MUCH….
One of the greatest gifts of God to man is the ability to know. Human beings can increase in knowledge, we do not just know, we know that we know. This means that we are beings of higher consciousness. This is why we can write history and even learn from what is happening in other parts of the world that we do not know first-hand. This is even deeper because we possess language that is higher than that of other creatures. Imagine what will happen if animals can communicate like we do, a typical example is what happened in the famous book written by George Orwell (Animal Farm) where the animals wanted to deal with human beings. I often marvel at the ability of human beings to tame and control animals like elephant and even lions. There is a circus show where a man performed with trained tigers, imagine if those tigers changed their minds and decide to do something crazy….
This gift and ability to know and seek knowledge can equally bring other challenges, it equally gives us the ability to doubt and challenge what we know and what we do not know yet. It can equally make us impose our own ideas on what we do not know. It can equally make us think that we know it all or that only the things we know exist. A philosopher said that man is the measure of all reality; of what is, that it is, and of what is not, that it is not. How can man be the measure of all reality? Yes, human beings occupy a high position among all the things that are created, but the truth is; human beings did not put themselves on the top of all creation. David in his Psalm acknowledged this (Psalm 8.1-5).
It is good that today being Trinity Sunday that we should reflect on the love of God. Moses encountered God on the mountain of Sinai. God passed by him and proclaimed Himself a God of tenderness and compassion, slow to anger and rich in kindness and faithfulness. Moses worshipped and prayed to God to journey with him and his people Israel despite their stubbornness. In the second reading, Paul greeted the Corinthians with the GRACE of our Lord Jesus Christ, the LOVE of God and the FELLOWSHIP of the Holy Spirit. In this greetings, Paul demonstrated the reality of the Trinity of love, grace and mercy. In the gospel, Jesus made it very clear that God loves the world SO MUCH!
Our Catechism tells us that God created us to know Him, love Him, serve Him in this world and be happy with Him in the next. God wants us to know the truth about Him. We were not born with all the knowledge about God and the world, we have to learn these from childhood. This knowing involves a relationship whereby we are introduced into a religion with certain teachings and ideas about God. Yet, we can hardly say that anyone has gotten full knowledge of God. The disciples of Jesus who met him in the flesh wanted him to show them the Father, but Jesus told them that seeing him is seeing the Father (John 14.9). Despite the fact that the Jews have been in relationship with God for ages, Jesus made it clear that they do not know the Father (Matthew 11.27, John 1.18, John 6.46). However, God has revealed a lot of things about Himself just like He did with Moses in the first reading of today. We can equally say a lot about God based on the works of His hand (Psalm 19.1, Romans 1.19-21).
The knowledge we have about God is not the same as other knowledge; no one has seen God and no one can say how God looks. We equally do not know where God is though our Catechism tells us that He is everywhere. This is knowledge of faith because we still ask God ‘where are You?’ when we face difficult challenges. Faith is the foundation of our relationship with God and it is impossible to please God without faith (Hebrews 11.6). The light of faith gives us access to knowledge that the senses cannot perceive. Though we rely a lot on our senses to understand and perceive the reality, yet, there are certain realities that require something more reliable than the senses. As a matter of fact, too much reliance on the senses will limit our ability to know the truth. The senses are only meant to assist the mind and the interpretations we give to the things we perceive with our senses depends on how deep or shallow our minds are.
Faith is not gullibility; faith does not mean we should not question things. In fact, faith should guide us and make us question, research, investigate, examine, and to seek more knowledge and wisdom into all things. Opposite of faith is not doubt, opposite of faith is fear. There are people who present fear and timidity as faith; they become puppets and refuse to utilize the abilities God gave them to think, create, develop and advance. God did not give us a spirit of timidity but of boldness and SOUND MIND (2 Timothy 1.7). However, one of the greatest aspect of knowledge is self-awareness. A wise man said; ‘man know thyself.’ Lack of authentic self-knowledge can lead to presumption, vanity and folly. The greatest deception should be self-deception. True self knowledge is a great step towards true knowledge of God because He lives in us and we are created in His image and likeness.
The mystery of the Trinity calls us to appreciate the love of God. This mystery demonstrates that God’s greatness did not prevent Him from coming down to His creature in a manner too deep to understand. This is why the Incarnation remains a great mystery; that the Creator took our human flesh and was born in the cold and poverty of human situation. We just ended the celebration of the Paschal mystery during the Easter period which ended with celebration of the coming of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is the greatest gift of God for His love has no end. Jesus called Him the Advocate, the Helper, the Spirit of Truth and the One Who will lead us to all truth. Jesus is the image of the Unseen God, in Him God moved among humans and revealed His grace. We saw him, touched him and ate with him (1 John 1.1).
This mystery of Trinity calls us to equally imitate God in His love and generosity. Jesus loved us as the Father has loved Him and sent us into the world as the Father had sent him (John 15.9, John 20.21). He wants us to remain in this love. He wants us love one another. Love is the trade mark of Christianity (John 13.35). We are human beings born with weaknesses and brokenness. Yet, we have received the gift of God, we have received the Spirit of God that makes us cry Abba-Father! Let us renew our love of God poured into our hearts, let us live out this vocation of love in our daily lives, let us renew our faith in the loving God Who is always faithful. It will not always be easy, but God wants to help us and He is always ready to supply the strength we need to grow, develop and mature in His love. May the Trinity of love bless us in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen.
