Sandi and I recently were able to attend an inspiring talk by Olympic medalist Isabelle Weidemann. She spoke to the value of community and the support of those who stand behind youth sport. “I may be the one on the podium, but there are so many people that got me there.” She also talked about embracing change and having the courage to keep learning and try new things, especially relevant to her as she leaves the competitive Olympic world behind.

Isabelle started skating at age 6 and took up speed skating at age 12, following family friends into the sport. She won medals for Canada at two Olympic Games.

At the 2026 Olympics in Italy, she won a second straight Olympic Gold medal in Women’s Team Pursuit (with Ivanie Blondin and Valérie Maltais). Individually, Weidemann earned top five finishes in the women’s 3000m and 5000m. Weidemann’s accomplishments resulted in her being selected as Team Canada’s Closing Ceremony flag bearer.

In Beijing in 2022, she won three medals; Gold in Women's Team Pursuit (with Ivanie Blondin and Valérie Maltais), Silver in Women's 5000m and Bronze in Women's 3000m.
