Back Forty Artisan Cheese www.artisancheese.ca In 2018 Back Forty started making cheeses with raw water buffalo milk and introduced the new Calabogie Blue Cheese and Little Antoines.

Founded in 2000, Back Forty is a small creamery, cheese shop, and tasting bar located on a farm in the hamlet of Mississippi Station Ontario. Using traditional old world methods and 100% natural unpasteurized sheep’s milk, each cheese is made by hand in small batches and then carefully tended to and aged from two to 12 months. In our petite fromagerie we produce six ewe’s milk cheeses: Flower Stat

ion, Madawaska, Bonnechere, Highland Blue, Ompah, and Pecorino Verona. In addition to select quality restaurants and fine food retailers across Ontario, you can purchase Back Forty Artisan Cheese direct from Jeff and Jenna Fenwick at their dairy and cheese shop. The Cheese Shop and Tasting Room is open Fridays from 3pm-7pm and Saturdays from 11am- 6pm. The new outdoor kitchen and tasting bar now serves a seasonal farm-to-table menu, including wood-oven pizzas, and the newly licensed riverside patio features Ontario craft beer, cider, and wine.

We’re so excited to welcome you back! Back Forty’s Shop & Bistro opens for the season on May 29th.

Join us every Friday and Saturday from 12–8pm (new extended hours) right through the fall. We’ll be serving up our farm-to-table menu, pouring some of the best Ontario craft beverages, and stocking the shop with our sheep’s milk cheeses alongside a curated selection of local provisions.

We’re looking for someone to join us for a working farmstead residency from May – October, with potential to grow into a long-term role.

Back Forty is a rare, fully integrated farmstead where we raise animals, grow food, make raw sheep milk cheese on-site, and serve it through our seasonal bistro, farm shop, and tasting room — all in one place.

This is a paid, work-focused residency grounded in real contribution and learning through immersion.
You’ll be part of the daily rhythm of food, farm, and cheese production.

Primary Focus:
• Bistro and kitchen prep
• Cheese production support
• Farm and garden work

Includes:
• Weekly pay + shared gratuities
• Private off-grid cabin accommodation

During our upcoming Winterland event on Saturday February 14th, escape into tranquility for a one-of-a-kind sauna experience. Nestled in the forest along Black Creek, the wood-fired sauna cabin overlooks a small waterfall and rushing rapids, creating the perfect soundtrack of nature as you unwind.

This rustic cabin comfortably fits up to four people, making it ideal for couples, friends or small families. A short hike through the winter landscape leads you to your secluded retreat, where the soothing sounds of the flowing creek set the mood.

The 1 hour private experience includes your trails passes for the day and a post-sauna fireside treat at the close by cabin in the woods. Flat rate fee for group of 4 or less.

Our annual Holiday Open House is coming up on Saturday December 13th. Join us at the farm for a festive day full of good food, drinks, fire pits and cheese! A great opportunity to stock up on cheese, gift baskets, and our farm raised frozen meats for the holidays. Our shop will be stocked with other locally made food and gifts and local chocolatier Fine chocolate by ludwig will be joining us again this year.

We are open for two more weekends this season! Here's a few details you might like to know.

This coming weekend we are open Friday and Saturday from 11:30-7 with our regular menu of wood-fired pizza, small plates, and salads. We will also have our Fireside Nights from 4-7 both days with fire pits, Caesars, and half priced cheese flights. This will be our last weekend of the season serving pizzas as we are switching up the menu the following week.

For the last weekend of September, in addition to our regular hours, we are also open for the North Frontenac Back Roads Studio Tour. Our menu will consist of fall comfort foods like pulled pork chili, mac and cheese, and hearty salads. Our hours for our closing weekend will be:
Friday 11:30-7
Saturday 10-7
Sunday 10-4
Food will be served starting at 11:30 each day, but the cheese shop and Jenna Rose Textile Studio upstairsa will be open earlier on Friday and Saturday for the studio tour.
