The are flowering!

FYI: they smell kinda like potatoes taste lol and fun fact, the colour of the flower sometimes reflects the colour of the potato… this pink flower belongs to Carolina Red potatoes.

Haven’t had a minute to post anything! Been in full go mode lately. Hustled to get a whole bunch of crops direct seeded ahead of the rains we got last week. Seeded the brassicas (radishes, cabbage, turnips, rutabaga, arugula, kale, broccoli, cauliflower), long beets, carrots, parsley, cilantro, round beets, dill, and parsnips. All of these have better germination rates when we get a mix of sun and rain. Usually I get them in the ground by mid to end of May… but life got in the way this year.

Seeded the zucchinis, pattypans & winter squash (sugar pumpkins, acorn squash, spaghetti squash, buttercup, butternut & kabocha squash) just after the rains. I think they’ll like the heat now.

Transplanted some lettuce and sunflower starts.

Busy prepping more beds, pulling weeds, hilling potatoes, adding wood chips to walkways, and starting more veggie and flower seeds in trays. Next to be direct seeded will be beans & corn. So much to do right now and such a short window to do it.

The sure likes the rain! Was thinking I might have to irrigate (ran the lines) but the rain showed up just in time! Lets hope that hot spell wasn’t too hot for the garlic! The garlic doesn’t like when temps get close to 30*C early in the growing season.

The fence is up and first succession of peas are planted. A little later than I’d like but 🤷🏻‍♀️.

It’s great when you pound the first few posts in and it feels easy cuz you’ve been keeping up with your workouts 💪. I highly recommend doing some kind of cross training (weightlifting/callisthenics/stretching/etc) to prep your body for a busy farm season and avoid all sorts of farm/garden related soreness/injury.

Got the in the ground last week! Stay tuned for our how to plant potatoes video coming soon!

Well, one too many dead chunks fell off of the heavy leaning Birch where we dry our garlic… so I decided to make a video with some wood splitting tips! Hope you enjoy :)
