Chickens, More Chickens, and Sad News

When Martin and Jeannie told me all the chicken antics that happened this past couple of weeks, I was reminded of a funny song I heard on the radio, Chickens in the Trailer Park, written and sung by Jaiden Riley, an Alberta Metis singer/songwriter.

Our chickens don’t usually give anyone grief and live quite happily in their big barn, with only a few barnyard chickens that live peacefully in the yard.

The laying hens that were chicks in the spring have grown to be robust and very productive, with very close to 100% of them laying every day. However, not all of them choose to lay their eggs in the nest boxes.

When Martin grabbed the pail that hangs on the feeder, he found an egg in it.

“Hmmm…how did this get here?”

After a few days of the same thing, he decided to hang around and find out what was going on. This is what he discovered.

To keep the chickens from sitting and pooping on the various flat areas in the barn, spike belts were screwed on these surfaces to deter the hens. Well, that didn’t work for this hen. There’s no competition for that spot.

Thankfully, most of the chickens behave themselves. But, as I said, they are robust, and some of them found out that Jeannie’s ducks get a great treat – dried worms.

When Jeannie feeds her ducks, some of the hens know what’s happening, fly over the fence, and enjoy the treats.

Commercial break – Jeannie’s ducks are laying lots of eggs, too. Duck eggs are a nice treat for breakfast and excellent for baking. If you would like some, let Jeannie know.

Here’s one more chicken story. There was a very loud, distressed cheeping in the dairy barn the other day. Investigating where it was coming from, Martin found a fluffy newly hatched chick beside a hole in the wall. A couple of years ago, when they were renovating and insulating the barn, he had purposely designed a cubby hole for any of the mother cats who would use it for their kittens. Our favorite banyard hen decided it was perfect for her second clutch of chicks.

After removing a couple of boards, Martin found 11 little fluff balls. He and Jonathan scooped them into a pail and caught the mother hen to take the little family to the brooder barn, where they are safe and warm.

In this video, you’ll hear her protests, but be assured that she was not harmed. She just squawked very loudly.

In preparation for winter, Heidi and Clara’s chèvre château needed to be cleaned out. James hooked up one of his big excavators to it, lifted it up, and moved it out of the way. He then took the mini hoe and cleaned it up. Easy peasy!

Now the sad news. Ivan, our wonderful pet sheep, passed away last week. He had lived the good life roaming freely around the barnyard, enjoying the green grass, eating the best hay, nibbling on spilled grain, and getting lots of loving head scratches from everyone. We’ll miss you, Ivan. You were so sweet.

Harvest Haven Pasture Raised Lamb Stew Meat – Our pasture-raised lamb is tender and flavorful and makes a delicious stew for a comforting meal on a crisp fall day.

Harvest Haven Linzer Potatoes, 5 lb or 10 lb bags – Thin, smooth-skinned potatoes with a slightly nutty flavor that are perfect for roasting, boiling, frying, and slicing into soups, stews, and casseroles. The best potato for salad because it doesn’t fall apart when cooked. An absolute favorite!

Harvest Haven Garlic – The staple of staples. A wonder food of flavor and power, one of the greatest known natural antibiotics, and lots of it.

Lancashire Hot Pot

Ingredients

1 tbsp butter

1 tbsp sunflower oil

1 lb Harvest Haven lamb stew meat

1 Harvest Haven cooking onion, peeled and sliced thinly

1 heaped tbsp flour

2 cups Harvest Haven hot lamb bone broth

2 bay leaves

1/2 tsp salt

1/2 tsp ground black pepper

1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce

3 Harvest Haven carrots, peeled and cut into chunks

1 1/2 pounds Harvest Haven Linzer potatoes, peeled and sliced to 2-3mm thick

1 tbsp melted butter for brushing

1/4 tsp dried thyme

Instructions

Preheat the oven to 170C/325F.

Melt the butter and oil in a medium-sized casserole or saucepan and fry the lamb until lightly browned all over. Spoon the lamb into a bowl, then add the onions to the pan and cook for 3-4 minutes, stirring regularly, until soft.

Add the lamb back in, then stir in the flour, cooking for a minute. Add in the stock, bay leaves, salt, pepper and Worcestershire sauce. Give everything a stir, bring to a gentle boil. Cover and cook in the oven for 30 minutes.

After 30 minutes, stir in the carrots. At this point, you can transfer the contents of the pan to a casserole or pie dish if you wish (I moved mine to a 25cm diameter pie dish). Top with the sliced potatoes. Start from the outside, and layer the potatoes, moving towards the centre.

Brush the top of the potatoes with the melted butter and sprinkle on the dried thyme. Cover with a lid or foil and place back in the oven for 1 hour.

After an hour, turn the oven up to 200C/400F and remove the lid. Cook for a further 30 minutes until the potatoes are browned and crisp on top.

Take out of the oven, and leave to rest for 5 minutes or so (it will be very hot), then serve with some green vegetables.

Harvest Haven Pasture Raised Lamb

Sheep must be raised in a calm environment for the best quality lamb. They are quite vulnerable to stress and totally dependent on the farmer to take care of them.

Rich pastures with short, tender grasses, fresh Grander Living Water, and a new pasture every few days result in contented sheep that produce tender, delicious, and mild-flavored lamb.

Because mothers and lambs get the same diet, the lambs live every day of their lives with their mothers, which makes for the least stress possible for everyone.

Harvest Haven Certified lamb is not just a “chemical-free” guarantee. It’s way beyond that. It means grass-fed. It means humanely treated. It means that the soil isn’t being depleted by unnecessary grain production, but is getting deeper and richer instead. It means that every aspect of production is good and wholesome, and the taste is fantastic!

German Honey Bars

Ingredients

Honey Spice Bars

2 3/4 cups flour

1 teaspoon baking powder

1/2 teaspoon baking soda

1/2 teaspoon fine salt

2 teaspoons ground cinnamon

1/2 teaspoon ground ginger

1/4 teaspoon ground cardamom

1/2 cup Harvest Haven Raw Honey

1/3 cup unsulphured molasses

3/4 cup packed dark brown sugar

1/4 cup butter, melted and slightly cooled

1 large Harvest Haven egg, room temperature

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1/2 cup toasted chopped almonds

Lemon Glaze

1 1/4 cups icing sugar

2 1/2 to 3 tablespoons fresh lemon juice

1 teaspoon finely grated lemon zest

Instructions

Preheat the oven to 350°F. Line a 9x13-inch baking pan with parchment paper, leaving an overhang on the sides for easy removal.

In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, ginger, and cardamom.

In a large mixing bowl, whisk the honey, molasses, brown sugar, melted butter, egg, and vanilla until smooth and well combined.

Gradually stir the dry ingredients into the wet mixture until a thick batter forms. Fold in the toasted chopped almonds until evenly distributed.

Spread the batter evenly into the prepared pan using an offset spatula or the back of a spoon.

Bake for 22 to 26 minutes, or until the top is lightly golden and a toothpick inserted near the center comes out with just a few moist crumbs.

Let the bars cool completely in the pan before glazing.

For the glaze, whisk together the icing sugar, lemon juice, and lemon zest until smooth. Adjust with a little more lemon juice if needed for a spreadable consistency.

Spread the glaze evenly over the cooled bars. Allow it to set for about 20 minutes before slicing into 16 squares.
