Our senior buck, Cariboo Creek OJ Jokers Wild. Crystal came out while I was milking today to get some goat snuggles and show practice, so I took the opportunity to try and get some updated photos. I kinda wish I had him clipped, but decent photos are HARD to get so I will take this as a win lol!

Got the first of 5 doelings clipped . . .this is Wildhaven JW Selena. She was such a trooper, nervous but well behaved. The show isnt for another couple weeks, but my old clippers (and my old body lol) can only do about 1.5 goats in a day before needed to rest. I also got Reign almost finished . . .pics maybe tomorrow when I finish her neck/head lol, right now she looks a little goofy. 2 more milkers, a bunch more kids/yearlings and 2 big hairy bucks to go.

Big milestone for Wildhaven Farm! I have done a couple of one day milk tests in the past, but this year my herd blew those tests out of the water! All 3 of my senior does earned their *M and all 3 of these girls are homebred does. I am ridiculously happy right now and very pleased with the way my herd is developing.

Cheese day today! Now that I am routinely seperating the dam raised kids at night, cheese day is every 3-4 days! About a gallon of yogurt, 2 5ish pound wheels of hard cheese and 1-2 smaller specialty cheeses is what I am grinding out every week right now. We haven't bought any cheese since March and with roughly 30lbs aging now, we are pretty well supplied for a while. My goal is for 125lbs before drying the herd up for winter . . .an attainable goal that works well with my plan to keep the girls milking for a full 305 day lactation this year!

2026 one day milk test complete! Still waiting for official results from CGS, but if my math is correct . . .all 3 of our senior does should qualify for their *M!

Wildhaven ST Pepper - 4.89kg (10.76lb)/3.88%bf
Wildhaven KL Regina - 4.51kg (9.9lb)/ 4.5%bf
Wildhaven RF Rens Reign - 4.55kg (10lb)/ 3.38%bf
Wildhaven JW Sundew - 2.02kg (4.44lb)/ 4.47%bf
Wildhaven JW Summer's Reign - 1.72kg (3.74lb)/ 5.33%bf

The highlight of this was Gina managing to come back from a bout of illness about 2 weeks before test day! She was pounding out almost 12 lbs a day but dropped to almost nothing when she didn't eat for 3 days! I had written her off for this year, but she managed to get back up to just shy of 10lb and she is holding steady at that now.

I am going to do regular component testing throughout the summer as I dont feel that a single data point is enough to judge on! I weighed my girls production very regularly and always know what they are producing volume wise, but knowing that fat and protein percentage needs lab work.

This buckling is the only intact boy that I have available this year. I had planned on banding all the 2026 boys, but this one just has everything going for him to be a herd sire . . .sooo, introducing Wildhaven JW Maximus! Out of Cariboo Creek OJ Jokers Wild and Wildhaven KL Regina.

Max's dam, Gina, is a workhorse of a doe. Consistently strong production year after year, peaking just under 12lbs this year as a 7yr old. She unfortunately got sick two weeks before milk test this year and tanked in production. She has bounced back very well and despite the drop in production still managed to put enough in the pail on test day to easily qualify for her *M!

Max's sire has two daughters that have freshened with udders that show vast improvements over their dam in both rear and fore attachments as well as strength in medial and overall width.

Cracked open my first bandaged cheddar today. I was hoping to age it a bit longer, but we ran out of all the other less aged cheese that was in my dairy fridge.

Omg . . .soooo yummy! It wasn't as "melty" as I had hoped, but the flavour was outstanding despite only being aged about 6 weeks. I have another cheddar that I made yesterday, I am going to bandage that one and hopefully be able to let it age a lot longer.

Crystal and I went to the Kamloops beekeepers field day today! So much collective knowledge combined with enthusiastic new and prospective beekeepers. We haven't got our hives ready for this year, but the plan is to learn as much as we can and gradually invest in the stuff we need to get started so we can add these amazing "livestock" to our already diverse operation! I love bees so much, I could spend hours just watching them . . .and honey is a pretty sweet bonus!

So happy to see all the spring transplants hardening off so nicely. Lots of stuff growing already out in the gardens too. I am really excited about all the space we will be using to grow food this year! And . . . a peek at our new greenhouse! Still need to get the shelving up but its put together and the plants spent the night out there. So relieved to not have to squish them all onto our seed starting shelf in the house, they outgrew that space a couple weeks ago!

Getting closer to planting out this year's crops! I have planted quite a bit already. Broccoli, celery, onions, kale transplants, and a bunch of cool season seeds like spinach, lettuce and peas. Got some potatoes in. Things are starting to roll. I am really stoked for the sweet potatoes this year. I am putting them on the sunny side of the house so they get a bit more heat than they did last year. The starts are huge and healthy already so fingers crossed we will get a decent crop this fall!
