'Twas the day before cold weather, and all through the field
Mr. D found a mouse scurrying round on the wagon;
The straw was a flying all over the field,
In hopes that the strawberries soon would be warm;
The strawberries were nestled all snug in their beds;
While visions of spring weather danced in their heads;
And mamma in her 'kerchief, and Mr. D in his touque,
Was hoping to finish so he could have a long winter's nap,
When out on the field there arose such a clatter,
He sprang from his wagon to see what was the matter.
He whistled, and shouted, and called them by name:
"Now, Wendy! now, Audrey! now Brunswick and Dickens!
On, Laurel! on, Annapolis! on, Seascape and Morrano!
To the top of the straw pile! He surveyed the field!
Now sleep away! sleep away! sleep away all!"
Down the straw pile he came with a bound.
He was dressed all in warm clothes, from his head to his foot,
And his clothes were all covered with straw and dust;
A bale of straw he had flung on his back,
And he looked like a pedler just opening his pack.
His eyes—how they twinkled! his dimples, how merry!
His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry!
And Momma laughed when she saw him, in spite of herself;
A wink of his eye and a twist of his head
Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread;
He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,
And filled the shredder shoot; then turned with a jerk,
And laying his finger aside of his nose,
And giving a nod, up the field he drove;
He sprang to his tractor, to his wife gave a whistle,
And away they both flew like the down of a thistle.
But I heard him exclaim, as he drove out of sight—
“Happy Winter to all, and to all a good night!
