Only Good Smells Here!

Hi folks! It’s your urban farmer Russ Ohrt here with Backyard Harvest. We are spreading compost in one of our backyards on Florence St right now.

We just had a neighbour stop and complain about the smell of the compost. But this compost does not smell poorly. In fact, it smells like a forest floor.

I just heard from a friend that the whole city is smelling like this. What they are smelling is industrially handled (improperly rotted) manure being spread somewhere. Industrial animal farming puts animals on grated metal floors so that all the p**p and urine can be collected in pits. In this anaerobic (no air) environment, the material putrefies rather than rots. When it is spread, the terrible smell travels for miles on the wind.

Backyard Harvest uses only compost collected from animals bedded on straw or wood chips and is then stacked above ground to rot and be in contact with air for years. The farmer turns the pile occasionally to ensure the whole pile rots properly.

I hope this clears the air! 😉

Well folks, it’s BACK! Thanks to a kind neighbour who found it in the bushes somewhere and let me know, I went and retrieved it. It’s spray painted gold, missing the seat, post, lock mechanism and lights but other than that, seems sound! Thanks for all your concern and sharing!!!
