Things I learned at my first in-person pitch competition:
1. Zoom made me forget that I’m a nervous pacer and hand talker LOL 🤌🏽🤌🏽
2. Do a practice run with peers. If I didn’t do a practice run I wouldn’t have noticed that I’m a nervous pacer 🥲
3. If you’re only pitching for the $$ you got it backwards!! You’re pitching amongst like-minded people and to crazy smart judges. Tap in!! Relationships last longer than a grant.
4. Be a human. Talk to the judges, crack jokes, make eye contact. Emotion is half the battle.
5. Practice your pitch so much that it doesn’t sound scripted. Once you know you’re concise and effective, you can embellish it however you want depending on the audience’s vibe.
6. What problem is your business addressing? Make it clear and back it up with stats.
7. Don’t sell yourself short! Nobody knows your product like you do. Yes, the judges can probably help you in so many ways. But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t have the opportunity to communicate what you know with confidence.
8. Don’t be scared to be stumped by a question. Nothing’s wrong with saying you don’t know yet. Who doesn’t love a lifelong learner or a teachable person?!
Thank you to The Bridge Youth Resource Centre for the opportunity to pitch for $20,000 on behalf of The Happy Era. Thanks to all of the generous sponsors and the team of coaches who helped me craft my best pitch. It’s crazy how much you helped me improve over 2 weeks!
Thank you to the incredible judges for sharing the vision of The Happy Era with me. I’m so excited to have won the prize and to get to work with a team of mentors moving forward. Congrats to all of the participants, I can’t wait to see where everyone is in a year’s time!!
Also, holy, how amazing are my family and friends?!!! Thank you for your endless support
