Liberty Foods Fruitvale's friendly community grocery store since 1957! Open 7 days a week, 9 AM till 6 PM! Along with shareholders, George Kaiway and J.D.

Before Liberty Foods became established in Fruitvale BC, its predecessor, Liberty Food Centre was originally founded in 1939 by Tom Wong and became the first supermarket in Nelson, BC. Hingwing, president and secretary, Liberty Food Centre boasted a number of modern amenities, including a refrigerated self-serve produce section. After 3 years of working at the Liberty Food Centre in Nelson, Dick and Susan Dar set out to establish Liberty Foods in Fruitvale, BC. Dick purchased a small grocery store on the outskirts of town and together with Susan’s brother Dennis, they took that tiny little store, built it up and relocated it to where it is today in the heart of Fruitvale on 1950 Main Street. Susan and Derrick Dar remain the faces of Liberty Foods and still continue to show the same passion towards the business as when Liberty Foods first opened in 1957. They have instilled a set of core values that effect the way the store operates on a regular basis.

🌟👏Fundraiser Time!👏🌟

It’s that time of year again! Liberty Foods is happy to announce the return of our Food Hamper Fundraiser for the 2026 Holiday Season!

Last year, we hit our goals of $10,000 raised and 1,000 Food Hampers provided to local food banks. That $10,000 went to a few local organizations who were working towards goals of their own. We could not have done any of this without all of you, in our community, so thank you again!

This year, we want to hear directly from the community about which organizations in our area need help with their goals. If you are involved in a local non-profit or organization that needs help with a project, goal, or fundraiser, let us know! This will allow the money that is raised to go to a place where a target hasn’t yet been met, and where the Liberty Foods involvement could push you over the line. Together, we can help those in need in our community!

We have put together a short application form. We invite you to complete it and let us know who you are and what you are working towards! Hope to hear from you soon! Deadline for application is November 7, and recipients chosen November 9.

As many of you know, Liberty Foods has a Bottle Donations Group program. Each month, we collect donations of cans, bottles, and other recyclable drink containers, and donate those to an organization.
