Hello Red Octopus Family,
Today I’m reaching out with a heavy heart on behalf of one of our dearest volunteers — and my best friend — Lori DeSerres.
This past Saturday, Lori’s husband, James, suffered his fifth heart attack. As many of you know, James is the main breadwinner, and he hadn’t even fully recovered from the last one before pushing himself back to work. He did what so many strong, hardworking people do — he put his family first and his own healing on the back burner And now the toll has become too great.
Lori is doing absolutely everything she can, but it’s simply not enough to keep them afloat while James focuses on the recovery he desperately needs.
If you know Lori, you know the kind of heart she has. She has always gone above and beyond — not just for the Red Octopus family
Un loading the produce checking shoppers out helping carry bags and so much more, but for me personally she has been an Angel.
When my mom passed in 2023, she was at my door in 25 minutes, despite living outside of Cornwall. She organized a full meal chain so I didn’t have to worry about cooking. She held me up at the funeral… and then stood beside me again when I said “I do” in 2024.
She is the kind of friend you thank the universe for — a rare, beautiful soul who shows up for everyone.
Now it’s our turn to show up for her.
I’m posting here in hopes that our Red Octopus Family can rally around Lori and James during this heartbreaking and stressful time. If you’re able, here are a few ways you can help:
1. Donate to their GoFundMe:

2. Make freezer-friendly meals
Something Lori can easily heat up on tough days. (Heart health friendly)
3. Gas cards
They’ll be traveling back and forth to Ottawa frequently for James’s appointments at the Heart Institute.
And if you’re not able to donate right now — that’s okay.
You can still help by sharing this post and spreading the love.
Support comes in many forms, and every bit truly makes a difference.
It takes a village… and together, we can help Lori and her amazing husband get through this.
Much love,
– Sam
