Running a small business has taught me many things, but one of the hardest lessons has been learning that finding good staff is often more challenging than finding customers.
People see the storefront, the products, the busy days, and the smiling faces behind the counter. What they don’t see are the early mornings, late nights, and countless hours spent worrying about whether shifts will be covered, tasks will be completed, or if the standards you’ve worked so hard to build will be maintained when you’re not there.
As a small business owner, every employee matters. Unlike large corporations, there isn’t always someone waiting in the wings to fill a position. When one person doesn’t show up, leaves unexpectedly, or isn’t fully invested, the impact is felt immediately. It often means working longer hours, sacrificing family time, missing important moments, or carrying additional stress that customers never see.
One of the biggest challenges is finding people who care about the business the way you do. And the truth is, they probably never will—because they don’t carry the same financial risk, sleepless nights, or responsibility. But what every owner hopes for is someone who takes pride in their work, notices when something needs to be done, and understands that every task contributes to the success of the business.
Staffing challenges can be frustrating and exhausting. There are moments when you question whether all the effort is worth it. Yet despite the setbacks, you keep showing up. You continue training, mentoring, encouraging, and believing in people because you know that a great employee can make an incredible difference.
Running a small business isn’t just about selling products or providing a service. It’s about leading people, solving problems, adapting to constant change, and carrying the weight of decisions that affect customers, employees, and your own family.
Some days are incredibly rewarding. Other days feel overwhelming. But behind every small business is an owner doing their best to keep everything moving forward, often with far less support than people realize.
To the small business owners struggling with staffing, feeling stretched thin, or wondering if anyone notices the effort you’re putting in—I see you. The work is hard, the responsibility is heavy, and the challenges are real. But every day you open your doors, you’re showing resilience, determination, and a commitment to your community that deserves recognition.
