Well, well, well… look who's finally crawling out from under her blanket and making her way back into the kitchen! 😂👩‍🍳

That nasty flu decided to pay me a visit (without an invitation, I might add! 😤), and it knocked me out for almost an entire week!

Today is our LAST market of the summer season in Airdrie! 😭❤️

And we’re going out with a BANG!

As most of you know, I did NOT take pre-orders for this market. Which means… drumroll again please… 😂

👉 There is actually a VERY good chance that I might still have food left at 6:30 PM! 🎉🤣

So for all of you who came to see me the last few weeks only to find a sad little table and me saying, “I’m so sorry, I’m sold out…” — TOMORROW MIGHT BE YOUR DAY! 😂

I have absolutely LOVED meeting so many of you this season. The conversations, the laughs, the familiar faces coming back week after week, and all the incredible support you’ve shown my little business have meant more to me than you probably realize.

And don’t worry — Swiss Kitchen Lady will be back next year!

Plus, I’m already working on a plan for after market season. 👀

The idea is that you’ll be able to pre-order your favourite Swiss Kitchen Lady goodies and pick them up on Wednesdays at the Canadian Tire parking lot in Airdrie. That way, you can order exactly what you want — and I don’t have to play the weekly game of “How many Schnitzels do these people possibly eat?!” 😂

I’ll advertise all the details once I’m ready.

But first… give me a week or two. 😂

And NO, that does not mean I’ll be lying on the couch watching TV and soaking in the hot tub all day. Although… that sounds pretty darn good. 🤔🤣

My freezers are currently looking very, very sad and empty, so I need a little time to get back into the kitchen, restock everything and get ready for the next chapter.

I’ve been thinking about writing this post for quite a while, and I hope it comes across in the spirit in which it is intended — with kindness, respect, and simply from the perspective of a small food business owner. ❤️

Over the past few years, I’ve regularly seen food being offered for sale on Facebook and other local groups that may require preparation in an AHS-approved facility.

Many times I’ve wanted to ask, “Are you AHS approved?” — and then stopped myself.

Why? Because I don’t want to be that person. 😅 I don’t want anyone to think I’m trying to spoil someone’s business, create trouble, or be a “Karen.” I genuinely love seeing people turn their cooking and baking talents into little businesses.

But lately, especially after seeing food businesses being shut down because they didn’t have the required approvals or permits, I feel this is something worth talking about.

There are three reasons why this matters to me.

First — and by far the most important — is food safety.

The rules are not there just to make life difficult for food businesses. Foods that require temperature control can become unsafe when they are prepared, cooled, stored, transported, or reheated incorrectly.

Things such as proper refrigeration, preventing cross-contamination, safe cooking and reheating temperatures, sanitation, proper food storage, and keeping potentially hazardous foods out of the temperature danger zone are incredibly important.

Customers usually cannot see any of this when they purchase food. They are trusting the person who made it.

And ultimately, these rules exist to protect them. ❤️

Second, I honestly think many people simply don’t know.

Someone may start selling food from home with absolutely no bad intentions. They make something delicious, friends tell them they should sell it, they post it on Facebook — and suddenly they have a little business.

But depending on what they are making, there can be permits, inspections, food-safety requirements, and restrictions on where that food can legally be prepared and sold.

Finding that out only when AHS becomes involved can be a very unpleasant and potentially expensive surprise.

Sometimes when someone asks, “Are you AHS approved?” they may actually be doing you a favour by giving you the opportunity to check the requirements before it becomes a much bigger problem.

And third, there is the small-business side of it.

Becoming an approved food business costs money — sometimes a LOT of money.

We pay permit fees. We purchase and maintain proper equipment. We follow inspection requirements. We monitor temperatures and food handling procedures. We make changes when regulations require them.

In my own case, we invested in building a second kitchen in our basement so that Swiss Kitchen Lady could operate properly and meet the requirements. That was a significant investment before I could even begin earning that money back.

And I’m only one tiny business.

Imagine a small restaurant. They may have enormous rent, especially in a city like Airdrie or Calgary, plus utilities, equipment, permits, insurance, employees, inspections, maintenance and countless other expenses — all before they sell their first meal of the day.

So yes, it can be frustrating when another person sells the same type of food from an unapproved home kitchen without carrying those same costs or responsibilities.

That doesn’t mean I want that person to fail.

Quite the opposite.

I would much rather see someone learn what is required, get properly approved if necessary, build their business and succeed. There is room for all of us. ❤️

But I also believe that if we are selling food to the public, we should all be playing by the same rules.

Those rules exist for a reason.

So if you ever see Swiss Kitchen Lady commenting underneath a food post and asking whether someone is AHS approved, please know where I’m coming from.

I’m not trying to be a Karen. 😂
I’m not trying to hurt somebody’s business.
And I’m certainly not trying to stop someone from succeeding.

I’m asking because food safety matters, customers deserve to know that the food they purchase is being prepared safely, and the businesses that invest the time and money to follow the rules deserve a fair playing field too.

That’s simply my perspective as one very small Alberta food business. ❤️

And if you’re thinking about starting your own food business: please don’t let the regulations scare you away! Ask questions, contact AHS, find out what applies to the foods you want to sell, and do it properly from the beginning.

I will always cheer for another small business doing things the right way. ❤️

I honestly don’t even know where to start except with a gigantic, heartfelt THANK YOU!

Yesterday’s market was once again TOTALLY CRAZY — in the absolute best possible way. 😂❤️
After selling out so quickly the last few times, I thought: Okay, Swiss Kitchen Lady… MORE. We need MORE.
And guess what?!
🥁 I actually had food left until 5 PM this time! 😂
Look at me making progress! LOL.

I’ve had a few people tell me, “You just need to make more!”
And believe me… I’m trying. 😂 But “just make more” is a little easier said than done.

Just to give you an idea of what I brought yesterday:

🚨 AIRDRIE… I’VE BEEN COOKING FOR TWO DAYS STRAIGHT! 😂👩‍🍳

Tomorrow is already the SECOND LAST Airdrie Farmers Market of the season 😭
And after selling out so quickly the last two times, I took that personally. 😂

So I’ve spent the last TWO DAYS in the kitchen, pulling 12-hour days and trying to make even MORE food for you this time!
Am I tired? Maybe.
Do I remember what the outside world looks like? Barely. 😂
Am I complaining? Absolutely not!

Because seriously… the support you guys have shown me has been AMAZING. ❤️ Seeing you come back, hearing that you enjoyed my food, and watching you get excited about the things I make makes every crazy hour in the kitchen worth it.
