He counts it like a man counting cash.
It isn’t money. It’s seaweed.
Shiro kombu — the pale heart of a single block of kelp, shaved away by hand, one paper-thin layer at a time, with a blade bent just for the task. The finest ribbons come off at a hundredth of a millimeter.
The kelp itself once went to emperors as tribute. And today? Fewer than ten people alive still shave it by hand.
So yes — we handle it like it’s precious. Because it is. One sheet, simmered in sweet vinegar until it turns to jade, then laid over pressed mackerel. A full day’s work from one of the last hands that can still do it.
The most valuable thing in this room was never money.
