Living in South East Queensland, the Queensland fruit fly is a huge issue especially for growing fruit. We have a fruit orchard of over 100 fruit trees and over the years we have tried various things to try and limit the fruit fly. We want to keep our fruit as natural and pesticide free as possible so spraying is out of the question.

This year we have done some research and we decided to make our own fruit fly traps. The methods we have found were fairly inexpensive as well. We have decided to create a trap for the female and a separate ones for the males to see which is better in the long term.

We bought the traps off Shein and this is the method we have used.

Male fruit fly traps:
1L Wild May Fruit Fly Attractant
2 pipettes of Frontline (Fipronil is what kills them and that is the main ingredient in frontline)

We have put some on the wick and then some in the bottom of the trap to see which is better.

Female fruit fly traps:
1 cup 100% fruit juice (juiced ourselves with 1 sachet of yeast)
2 tablespoon cloudy ammonia

We also just put the liquid in the bottom of the traps.

This time we have done separate traps but we may do a mixed trap of both next time around.

We will check back next week and see what is working.

What have you found that works for fruit flies?

I am still very much a beginner when it comes to vegetable gardening but this season I have decided to really make a go of it and learn as much as I can and hopefully have a productive garden!

Companion planting is one thing I have been researching and marigolds are great for repelling certain pests so I have started to interweave them into my garden beds. Basil, lemon grass, rosemary and mint are also supposedly great companion plants plus great herbs so I had added them in as well. Plus some alyssum for ground cover as I really hate weeding!

My little offsider and I took advantage of the cooler weather here in South East QLD to do some planting. We had a couple of hot days so some of these plants have been waiting a few days to get planted. But it is cooler now and hopefully some more rain is on the way, so it was a good day to get out in the garden!

Have you had much success with companion planting?

I love hearing the bees at work. Especially after losing most of our hives, it is so nice to see and hear them being active.

Listen closely. You can hear the faint hum of the bees at work in the maple tree. What a blessing! πŸ™πŸ
