People keep asking me when will we have honey to sell again.
Varroa is now endemic in Australia!
Together with the Small Hive Beetle also endemic, maintaining bee colonies has becoming demanding.
This is a photo of Apis mellifera and the Varroa destructa mite.

We were wondering what the buzzing was around the back lawn.
Also, what was making the small piles of dirt! Solitary Blue banded bees have invaded. They do make nest near each other.

Bees are going well at present. Had to put more supers on as they have been hanging out in this hot humid weather.

The poor Bunya didn't like the storm the other night. 20+cm diameter log, 8m log from the 15m tree.
It didn't have a good tap root unlike the one that is still standing behind it. The softwood timber is useful for acoustic boards for string instruments and also used to be for making butter boxes(?).
This was the first tree to drop some bunya cones this year.

Tetragonula, stingless native bees are back in the raspberry patch gathering nectar and pollen. Have let the Diakon radish and other vegetables flower to save seed.
Learnt a lot at the Tocal Bee day such that they travel less that half a km from their hive to source food. That means Ill have a look for tree hollows nearby.

Busy few days before next rain doing some pile burns.
Three Photos of what to do and what NOT to burn.
The photo with the cut timber shows one pile that was too big to burn and provided some good fire wood. The other photos shows a small manageable pile that took about 2 hours to burn completely. The other photo is off a heap put to gether by the clearer which needs to be broken up to smaller piles, lots of soil.
We have now safely done three to four piles over the last four nights. The way to go in clearing up!

Even with the 7mm the other day we managed to get 5 pile burns done before the 75mm drenching tonight.

Harvested the last of the edamame and planted the first lot of sugar snap peas. Still very dry in our area with only occasioanl showers.
Lots of pile burns to do when the fire restrictions end Sunday. Great care and attention to weather predictions . will be needed due to the dry.
I guess there will be more fire calls until there is some drenching rain, hopefully not as bad as the recent Pindimar fire.

After a few months with little or no rain we have the current weather pattern.
A blocking high in the Bight and a squeeze from a high NW of NZ.
Moist tropical air coming from the tropics meeting cold southerly air could bring some worthwhile rain and possibly even form a Low off the East coast.

The first Bunya pine nuts on the ground.
Something, probably Flying foxes has already been into one, just one nut left.
Just as well the trees are not near any paths as not good landing on ones head.

Our Story

The ever changing story!

Although we still have chooks for ourselves we have moved more into honey production. With the two horses agisted on the farm came contact with restaurants in Sydney and a weekly delivery of produce. Lemonade Fruit are a great hit as are blood oranges and ripe star fruit. Chefs are keen to buy direct from us as they receive organically grown product at peak flavour. Fruit that is picked ripe, not green, and not stored in cool rooms for days/weeks.

Truly free range eggs. Our chooks are like their wild ancestors and can free range in the bush and orchard. Their poos fertilize over 100 different edible plants/fruits. Bees do the pollination to produce delicious local honey. Our preserves and chocolates are made using home grown ingredients, small batch processing ensures that the aromatics are preserved too.
