Much of the produce comes loose so please provide your Hubster with a NAME LABELLED BAG: ALSO - calico/wash nets to put handfuls in (do not expect your Hubster to provide paper bags please): Bring in your old icecream containers, for example, for the Hub to put soft stuff in. If you get an item in plastic, recycle it in your soft plastic bin. We don't interrupt the packing from the farmer. Farmers are trying to work out how to transport produce and it can’t always be plastic free - for the moment. The Sugar Cane bags are not strong, don't last and definitely not airtight. Cardboard and paper fall apart. New technology is being worked on. NOT FOR ME
If after you’ve tried it and Box Divvy is not working the way you want, then you can cancel membership. So? Join our group to make a difference. You have the power to do so. Cut your food bill significantly – Wow! The goal: to cut your food bill, without compromising on the quality, freshness and variety of food. With minimal effort, minimal packaging and food miles, and still paying farmers and suppliers a fair price for their produce.

Ecokaps relaunch: NEW Dishwashing Sheets

Ecokaps are launching:
1. A new Dishwasher detergent in sheet form. Just pop into the little bucket and set it to run. Exhaustively tested by a large NZ manufacturer of dishwashers!
2. All other cleaning and handwash products have been converted to sheets, which dissolves so much better than the tablets. No more blocked spray pumps.
Ecokaps continues to keep single use plastic bottles from going to landfill.
The sheets are backward compatible with any existing bottles - but if you don’t have a bottle, just get yourself one of the kits.
The dishwashing sheets (and other eco-cleaning favourites) are effective, affordable, and environmentally friendly, with many products using a seaweed binding agent (sodium alginate). Safe for septic and grey water systems, these sheets help reduce plastic bottles and are better for the planet. Compared to other eco-sheet brands like Lucent Globe, Ecokaps delivers reliable performance without confusing labels or chemistry jargon. Just sheets that work.

Halloween …. Eeeeeek!!

Jack ‘O Lantern Halloween Pumpkins available from Box Divvy this week for $14 each. They weigh around 5kg. Here’s a video showing you how to carve one: https://ow.ly/9OFx50XersZ
Here are some more ideas: https://ow.ly/vto550Xert1

Can you eat the flesh? Not really: when you clean them out, it’s mainly seeds – but…they can be dried and roasted! Most of the flesh needs to stay inside the pumpkin to give it structural strength and prevent it from caving in.

However, afterwards you can turn a Halloween pumpkin into a bird feeder by cutting it in half, scooping out the insides, adding perches and a hanging mechanism, and filling it with birdseed. This provides a temporary, biodegradable bird feeder as a way to reuse your pumpkin after Halloween.

Food for Thought

Why Provenance is important

At a time when everyone seems to be claiming that they’re ‘supporting local farmers’, we need to ask ourselves: what’s local? And which farmers? And how supportive?

Because when push comes to shove, a lot turns out to be ‘farm-washing’, local means: anywhere in Australia, and supportive means: we just buy your produce at the lowest price, thank you very much. (And continue to charge customers like wounded bulls). Luckily, scientists are getting very close to being able to determine where a prawn was actually caught, or whether a corn-fed chicken was actually fed corn, or where a bunch of kale was grown locally (for example, by George Portelli in Maroota), or someplace else. https://ow.ly/QRb150Xa7OT

Box Divvy has invested a lot of time and effort into setting up the traceability and transparency of not only our fresh produce, but of all products we sell.

The importance of ‘provenance’ (literally: the place of origin ) is especially relevant when it comes to blueberries: a lot of publicity around the rapid expansion of blueberry farming around Coffs Harbour highlights two major issues: the improper and possibly excessive use of chemicals (and not following guidelines with regard to withholding periods – i.e. the minimum length of time between spraying and picking), and the flouting of labour laws by unscrupulous labour hire firms.
https://ow.ly/rEeA50Xa7P2

Around 90% of our blueberries are sourced from 2 suppliers:
• The bulk comes from Mountain Blue who has been growing in the Lismore hinterland in northern NSW since 1975. They are very strict on when and what chemicals they use, and on observing the withholding period when they do. In all their testing, they have never found any chemical residues. They also do not employ labour hire firms, instead preferring to employ picking and packing staff directly – and looking after them. For more information, check out their website – there are sections about sustainability and employment (including a handy guide about accommodation options – in case you were thinking of doing a road trip to the Northern Rivers region…)
• OZ Berries (Or: OZ Group) is a 100% farmer-owned co-operative (similar to Norco), with farms from Grafton to Macksville. Most are family farms, where literally the whole workforce of pickers and packers consists of husbands, wives, cousins, brothers and sisters. Where they employ external staff, they strictly follow ‘Fair Farms’ guidelines. https://ow.ly/k61950Xa7ON

Oz Group has been a Fair Farms member since 2019. All their berry supply is also compliant with Freshcare certification, which includes strict guidelines for chemical use. For more information (and to meet some of their growers), check out their website. https://ow.ly/jEBZ50Xa7P5

As promised. Artichoke recipes.
Recipes are: Artichips for kids and Rita’s Stuffed Artichokes

Artichips - For kids to make. Serves 2:

• 2 Artichoke
• butter flavoured cooking spray, 3 seconds
• 1 tsp BBQ seasoning

Rinse Artichoke under cold water and trim stem to 5cm long. Snip/Trim each leaf with kitchen shears or scissors. Set Artichokes aside.

Careful when using hot water! In a large glass microwavable container microwave 3 cups of water until boiling (about 5 minutes). Place the Artichokes in the dish of hot water with the stem sitting flat in the water. Cover the Artichokes with an inverted Pyrex microwavable bowl. Microwave Artichokes on high for 15 minutes. Artichokes are done when you can easily pierce through the stem with a fork.

Remove the Artichokes from dish and cool until you can handle. Separate leaves from the choke and place loose Artichoke leaves in a food storage bag. (Save the Artichoke Hearts for another healthy dish).

Spray butter or garlic flavoured cooking spray on Artichoke leaves and sprinkle with your favourite BBQ seasoning. Close bag and shake until leaves are coated. Store in the refrigerator and serve warm or cold with your favourite dip.

Rita’s Stuffed Artichokes
Adjust depending on how many artichokes you have.

• 5 large tender artichokes
• 500g new baby potatoes
• 100g freshly shelled peas
• 100g freshly shelled broad beans
• 1 cup olive oil
• 3 cloves garlic, finely chopped
• 1 cup fresh breadcrumbs
• 2 tsp parsley, chopped
• Pepper

Remove old and loose leaves form the artichokes. With a sharp knife, cut off the stalk (this will be used later) and remove the fibrous skin. Slice off about 2cm from the top of the artichoke. Make the filling by mixing breadcrumbs, garlic, parsley and pepper. Place an artichoke in your hands and shake the leaves loose with your thumbs. Place stuffing between the leaves.

In a large saucepan, place the artichokes upright in the centre. Add potatoes around the artichokes. Put broad beans, peas and artichoke stalks on the top and sprinkle with remaining stuffing. Season with salt and pepper. Drizzle olive oil over the top and fill the pan with water - enough to cover the artichokes. Bring to the boil and then reduce heat to low, and cook uncovered for about 1 hour. Do not stir, just shake occasionally. Serve with fresh crusty bread.

From Field to Fork: Raymond’s Globe Artichokes in Season
Spring is in full swing at Castlereagh and Freemans Reach and Raymond Camilleri has been busy in the fields harvesting beautiful globe artichokes.

The tender, green globes are a true seasonal delight, and nothing beats picking them fresh from your own acreage or, in Raymond’s case, from his mum’s farm at Freemans Reach. With their nutty, slightly sweet flavour, these artichokes are perfect for a variety of dishes, from simple steamed preparations to more elaborate sautés and salads.

Preparing globe artichokes is easier than many think.

Start by trimming the tough outer leaves and snipping the sharp tips. Cut off the top third and trim the stem, then rub the cut surfaces with lemon to prevent browning. From here, you can steam or boil them until tender usually 25–40 minutes depending on size. Serve with melted butter, aioli, or a drizzle of olive oil and a sprinkle of sea salt. For a richer dish, hearts can be sautéed or roasted with garlic and herbs, adding a delicious centre piece to any meal straight from Raymond’s fields.

Ah, want recipes. Come back Thursday morning. We will have two beaut ones.

Have you got the Fever?

Fever Tree Mixers

We’re already getting hot and sweaty about this one: Fever Tree mixers are back for more action! After previously selling out in less than a week, we’re not taking any risk and bought 20 pallets worth. So what have we got?
• You already know the Raspberry and the popular Elderberry mixers, sold by the 8-pack for $5 each. That’s less than half price.
• Then there’s the Light Tonic water, which comes in 200ml bottles, sold as a 4-pack for $3. That’s a massive 67% off.
• And here are some new ones: these 500ml Margarita Mixers and Martini Mixers are selling for as much as $24 a bottle. Crazy right? And you still have to add the alcohol. Although, actually you don’t: they taste good on their own, with some sparkling mineral water. Anyway, don’t pay $24: they’re just $3 a bottle. That’s a crazy 80% off, with a Best Before Date of 31 December. I just don’t think they’re going to last that long…
Actually, we think we have enough stock for the next 2-3 weeks – so Friday Hubs have nothing to worry about.

Truss us. These are great value.

Tomatoes
Regular tomatoes have been cheap for a while, but truss tomatoes haven’t – until now: several growing regions have started picking, and prices are easing to $3.75 a kilo. Or if you buy by the 5kg tray, we can go as low as $3.30 a kilo. That’s the lowest price so far this year.

Rockmelon

I don’t want to sound melon-dramatic, but Queensland rocks: after winning both the AFL and NRL grand finals, we reckon this week’s rockmelons from North Queensland make it a trifecta. Eating superbly, these rockstars are just $2.50 a pop at Box Divvy.
