Kyoto Premium Gyokuro 🍃

Gyokuro is Japan’s most refined loose-leaf green tea, shade-grown to develop its deep, umami-rich flavour — similar to the cultivation process used for tencha (matcha).

At Green Tea House, we’re currently selling a limited release of our Premium Gyokuro, made from the Gokou cultivar and traditionally shade-grown using the “Tana” method in the Uji region of Kyoto.

Curious how to brew the perfect cup of gyokuro? Ask us in store ✨

Today the shop had a surprise visit from Mujyo-san and Steve from the Perth Zen Centre

Japanese tea and Zen Buddhism share a long history. After Buddhist monks introduced tea to Japan from China, the Zen monk Eisai (栄西) wrote the famous text Kissa Yōjōki (喫茶養生記) in the 13th century, promoting tea and its health benefits.

Zen Buddhist monks drank early forms of matcha to help them stay alert during meditation.

I was surprised to learn that Mujyo-san is trained in the Oribe School (織部流) of tea ceremony!

Thanks, guys — it was great to chat about Japanese tea culture.

The kyūsu (急須) is the traditional Japanese teapot for brewing loose leaf tea.

At Green Tea House we have an extensive range of teapots varying in size, style, material, filtering and region.

One of the unique features is the handle that protrudes from the side of the pot, allowing you to pour by rotating the wrist.

Vist the shop to actually hold and feel the teapots before choosing the right one for you :)

On our recent visit to Shizuoka, we visited a few historic Japanese tea locations dedicated to Hikosaburo Sugiyama 杉山 彦三郎 and the tea cultivar Yabukitaやぶきた.

Yabukita is by far the most used Japanese tea variety. Depending on which source you look up, it takes up about 75-85% of production. If you’ve drank some tea from Japan, chances are you’ve tasted some Yabukita! The cultivar’s tolerance to the cold, high yield and balanced taste makes it a reliable choice for most farmers.

Sugiyama-san (born 1857) was an agricultural engineer and politician. He selected the Yabukita variety in 1908 but it would be after WW2 and his death in 1953 for the variety to be officially registered. As well as selecting Yabukita, he contributed immensely to the selective breeding science of Japanese tea.

We visited Sugiyama-san’s bust at the Sunpu Castle Park in Shizuoka city, as well as the original Yabukita tree and a small tea plantation in memory of Sugiyama-san which were a short train ride out of the city centre. The latter two locations are quite inconspicuous - you might walk by and not notice them!
