🌱 Happy World Food Day for this Friday 🥑🍓

Food is so much more than what’s on our plate. It’s about amazing flavours, beautiful variety, nourishing textures, fibre, vitamins, minerals, and the incredible healing potential of nature’s bounty. 🌿

When we connect with our food and give thanks for it, we also reconnect with the farmers and gardeners who nurture the soil, plant the seeds, and grow the goodness that feeds us.

💚 A Heartfelt Thank You to Our Community

We are incredibly grateful to the organic farms that have supplied us for almost 17 years, and to our wonderful community for supporting our New Harvest Produce Organic store throughout all these years

🍇 Food for Thought: Why Organic Matters

The Pesticide Action Australia - Australia’s Residue Report 2026 made the news last week. The report raised many concerns including findings of PFAs (forever chemicals) and illegally high pesticide residues in many conventionally grown produce sold in major supermarkets, including strawberries, grapes, and capsicum to name a few.
These concerns also remind us that pesticide use doesn’t just affect what ends up in our bellies. Chemicals can also impact the wider environment, including the soil, air, and water.

The good news? We have the power to make a difference through the choices we make every day.

🌾 Celebrate Your Organic Farmer!

In the lead up to World Food Day, let’s shine a light on the dedicated organic farmers who work tirelessly in their fields to grow food in harmony with nature
Organic farming takes patience, care, and commitment. Rather than relying on synthetic pesticides and chemical shortcuts, organic growers focus on nurturing healthy soil, supporting natural ecosystems, and working with nature’s rhythms.

Thank you for supporting our New Harvest Produce, Seaford Organic store and the incredible farmers behind your food. Here’s to many more years of growing, sharing, and nourishing our community together.

Wishing you a beautiful week ahead, filled with fresh food, gratitude, and goodness! 💚🌱

Good Forest, Good Soil, Good Water 🌱💧

What if protecting our drinking water could actually save money?

“Munich did the math and found paying farmers to go organic was 45 times cheaper than filtering toxins farmers use from its drinking water.”

We came across this headline on social media recently — and it caught our attention enough that we had to look into it!

What we found was an inspiring example of a city thinking differently about how to protect one of its most precious resources: clean drinking water.

Munich’s organic solution

Munich, the third-largest city in Germany, has been promoting organic farming in the catchment area of its drinking water since 1991.

Rather than relying solely on increasingly costly water treatment to remove agricultural pollutants, Munich encouraged farmers in the surrounding watershed to transition to organic farming.

The thinking was simple:

Prevent contamination at the source, rather than pay to remove it later.

Farmers were supported in making the transition, with compensation for their efforts and assistance from existing organic farming organisations to help make the program successful.

And the results were impressive.

By 1998, around 70% of the agricultural area in the valley — representing approximately 90 farms — had converted to organic farming as part of the program.

Today, Munich’s approach is often highlighted as a leading example of watershed protection through sustainable agriculture.

An optimistic story about doing things differently

We love stories like this because they challenge the idea that looking after people and the planet necessarily comes at the expense of financial sense.

Sometimes, the most sustainable solution can also be the most economical one.

Instead of continually investing in expensive solutions to clean up pollution, what if we invested in preventing that pollution in the first place?

It’s a shift from:

Pollute → filter → clean up

to:

Protect → prevent → preserve

And that idea extends far beyond Munich.

Good forest. Good soil. Good water. Healthy communities.

Hello Friends,

A Short Week at New Harvest 🌱

Who’s up for a short week? We know we are!

We’re open Monday–Thursday, plus Saturday this week.

We’ll be closed for the footy final public holiday while we take a little time for R&R. 🏈☀️

Hello, Spring!

We’ve already had some pretty beautiful sunny Spring days, and what a relief after the grey, chilly winter!

How are you enjoying your downtime? The beach is looking particularly enticing, and we’re loving preparing more meals with fresh salad ingredients.

Of course, we need our trusty red onion, cucumber, tomato & lettuce mix, but salad season can be so much more than that!

What’s going into your Spring salads?

Here are a few ideas to mix and match from our New Harvest organic offerings:

Citrus, pears & papaya

Chillies & fresh herbs

Fetta or brie

Roast veggies

Buckwheat

Garlic

Lentils & rice

Pasta spirals or penne

Sultanas & cranberries

Pesto

Nuts & seeds

Get creative and make those salads sing! 🌿

What are you throwing into your salads this Spring?

🍋 Discover the Benefits of Sour Foods

Have you heard that sour-tasting foods can be good for you?

But why exactly? We hear you ask!

Sour foods create that familiar puckering sensation — an astringency, if you will. In traditional food and wellness practices, sour foods are valued for their potential to support the body’s natural processes, including the liver and digestion.

They can also be a delicious addition to a balanced diet, with sour foods often associated with supporting heart health, healthy blood pressure, digestion and reproductive health.

So, What Counts as a Sour Food?

We’ve put together a handy list of some of the beneficial sour foods available at New Harvest to help inspire your next shop.

🍏 Sour Produce

Tangelo
Grapefruit

Spring is a wonderful time to focus on fresh, vibrant foods and support your body with plenty of nourishing organic produce. Why not try adding a few of these sour foods to your meals and see which ones become your new favourites?

Tangelo Inspiration 🍊

We’ve also been inspired by some delicious tangelo recipes we found online. If you’re looking for something a little different to try, how about:

Tangelo & Beetroot Salad — fresh, colourful and full of flavour
Tangelo & Ginger Marinade for Fish — a zesty twist for your next fish dinner
Tangelo Upside-Down Cake — because healthy eating can still include a little indulgence!

🌸 Yesssssss, It’s Spring!

Crazy rainy downpours, gorgeous sunshine and rainbows… Woohoo! ☔️🌈

🌿 Welcome to True Spring

September and October mark True Spring — traditionally described as a time that is warm, wet and windy, with an abundance of flowers and insects.

Here in Melbourne/Naarm, the Indigenous people recognised six seasons, rather than the four European seasons:

Pre-Spring
True Spring
High Summer
Late Summer
Early Winter
Deep Winter
It certainly feels like six seasons make more sense to us!

We’re now entering September, also known as Orchid Season. Have you spotted any of the tiny orchids while out on your local nature walks?

Then comes October — Tadpole Season! Soon we’ll be listening out for those wonderful frog sounds around the Seaford wetlands. 🐸

☕ Warm, Nourishing & Nourished

The weather is getting slightly warmer, but there’s still that familiar damp chill factor in the air.

So we’ll be keeping the organic teas, drinking cacao, soup ingredients and sourdough coming! They’re perfect for staying warm, strong and nourished as we transition out of Pre-Spring and into True Spring.

🍰 Healthy Treats for Rainy Days

Still craving a little something sweet? We’ve got plenty of healthy snack options for those moments!

Our organic baked cakes and slices are made with wholesome organic ingredients — including some cleverly hidden veggies.

Or try our gluten-free raw treats, designed to hit the spot without the huge blood-sugar spike of many conventional sweet treats.

And for those cosy home-movie nights on rainy Spring evenings, we’ve got plenty of healthier chip options too!

🥕 Spring Produce is Looking Fabulous

Our certified organic Spring produce is looking fantastic, so come in and stock up for the week ahead.

There’s plenty to inspire your kitchen, whether you’re planning:

Warming soups
Fresh stir-fries
Roasted veggie dishes
Juices and smoothies
Bright, seasonal salads
Delicious citrus varieties are still abundant, along with the last of the gorgeous local kiwifruit, late-season apples and pears — and plenty more seasonal goodness. ☺️

Happy True Spring! 🌸
