🌟 Finalist Spotlight: University of Tasmania Student Association (TUSA Food Hub)

When university students are skipping meals to make rent, something needs to change. The TUSA Food Security Program is doing exactly that.
Since launching the TUSA Food Hub in 2023, this incredible program has been providing University of Tasmania students with free and low-cost food, fresh produce, and essential pantry items - all while building real community through lunches and food education activities. Now spanning multiple campuses and powered by a passionate team of student volunteers and staff, the program is tackling one of the most quietly pressing issues in student life: food insecurity.

On being named a finalist, the team shared that it was "a meaningful recognition of the collective effort behind the program, particularly the work of our student volunteers and community partners" - and that it helped shine a light on "the growing issue of student food insecurity and the importance of community-led solutions." 🙌

The nomination also opened unexpected doors: "It provided an opportunity to connect with other organisations and community leaders who are also working to create positive change in Tasmania."

As for what keeps them going? "The biggest motivation is seeing the real difference the program makes for students facing cost-of-living pressures. Access to healthy, affordable food and a welcoming community space can have a significant impact on student wellbeing and success." ☘️

And their message to anyone sitting on the fence about nominating? "We would strongly encourage people to nominate individuals or organisations doing meaningful work in their communities."

IMPORTANT FOOD HUB UPDATE ⬇️

🥦 Sandy Bay:
We've got news! As you know, the Hobart TUSA Office recently moved to Level 1, Social Sciences Building, and we're excited to share that Sandy Bay Food Hub is moving next week, right in the heart of our Sandy Bay Campus.

Sandy Bay Food Hub will open as usual on Thursday (26 Feb) in our new space, so excited!

🥦 Hobart City:
Sadly, this means that our Hobart City Food Hub will be closed next week as part of our Sandy Bay move, but also because we have our iconic Clubs and Societies Day at UTAS Rugby Oval in Sandy Bay Campus (you don't want to miss this!)

🥦 Inveresk:
Co-incidentally in Launceston, next Wednesday is Launceston Cup a.k.a a public holiday, so Inveresk Food Hub will be open on Thursday instead. Same ol' good stuff, just a different day!

AND THEN... Food Hub will be back to normal hours starting Week2.

This means, starting Monday 2 March 2026, Food Hub are open on:
Sandy Bay: Tuesday & Thursday, 11am - 2pm @ Social Sciences Building
Hobart City: Wednesday, 1pm - 3pm @ Student Hub Kitchen
Inveresk: Wednesday & Thursday, 11am - 2pm @ Railway Cottage
Cradle Coast: Tuesday, 12pm - 3pm @ Community Lounge
Rozelle: Wednesday, from 12pm @ Student Kitchen

tl;dr: next week Sandy Bay Food Hub is moving to Social Sciences Building, Hobart City Food Hub is closed, and Inveresk Food Hub is open on Thursday instead of Wednesday; and then Food Hubs are back to normal hours starting week 2!

As 2025 comes to a close, we would like to extend a major THANK YOU to all the organisations and people that have supported our TUSA Food Hubs this year, particularly as we expanded our offering from one campus to five. Without the support of both organisations and individuals, we would not have been able to expand our program the way we have.

We’ve been fortunate enough to have a range of incredible regular partners and suppliers this year, without whom our Food Hubs would not be what they are. A massive thank you to:

• Loaves and Fishes Tasmania
• Eat Well Tasmania
• OzHarvest
• Hutchins Middle School
• Gateway Life
• Source Eco Hub
• University of Tasmania
• Foodbank Tasmania
• Foodbank NSW & ACT
• Addi Road NSW
• Banjos Burnie
• Farm it Forward
• Burnie City Mission

We would also like to extend our thanks to everyone else who has collaborated with or supported us this year, including everyone who has donated. Whether you donated produce or money, your support – no matter how big or small it may have felt – was vital to keeping our Food Hubs providing support and community for UTAS students in both Tasmania and Rozelle.

Thank you, importantly, to the people who have donated their time to come and volunteer at one of our Food Hubs. Without you, things would not run as smoothly as they do. We are incredibly grateful for the time you’ve spent with us this year, whether you volunteered just once, every week, or somewhere in-between.

The TUSA Food Hub is now closed for the remainder of 2025. Our Food Hub’s will reopen for their usual summer holiday hours from the week beginning January 12th, 2026.

If you need support or community during the time we’re closed, take a swipe through the slides above for a list of just some of the services in the communities near our Food Hub’s. No matter where you are in Australia, you can also use Ask Izzy (askizzy.org.au) to find the support you need, when and where you need it.

We’ll see you in the New Year!

Next week, alongside running our usual Food Hubs, we're going to be giving out FREE Holiday Hampers! 🧺🥦 Come along to your usual Food Hub time and location, and grab a Hamper while you're there. The hamper will have a mix of handy staples and fun treats 🍫; you can expect to find snacks and drink sachets (tea, coffee, hot chocolate) alongside your usual pantry staples and mixes.

This will be our last week of Food Hub until January, so come along and grab a bag of goodies for the holiday season! The Hampers are totally free, but numbers are limited, so head to Rubric and pre-book to avoid missing out! 🎟️ 🍏

📣 For next week only, the Hobart City Food Hub will be operating on Monday!! Come along next Monday between 1pm and 3pm to grab your fruit, veg, and pantry staples for the week, because we won't be around on Wednesday 🥦

This change is for one week only; from the week of December 8th, we'll be back to Wednesdays as usual 📅. This change doesn't impact any of our other Food Hubs, which will continue to run to their usual summer schedule.

Registrations for next Monday's Hobart City Food Hub are open NOW - head to Rubric to get your ticket, or register for another Food Hub from Friday at 6pm! If you have any questions about our Food Hubs, email the team at [email protected].
