Willow’s Roadside Stall

Willow’s Roadside Stall This page is to advise what is for sale on our stall and what is the meaning of the flags we fly.

We are back from our holiday and the stall is open. We have added some new plants and expanded the range of succulents. The good news is we have reduced the price of our succulents to just $5 each.
We have added strawberry plants to our selection. These are an old fashioned commercial variety that will produce a lot of new plants via runners. We started with four plants from NSW and now have around four thousand plants! The fruit are large and delicious.
Today we are flying the United Nations flag as it is World No To***co Day. (My spell checker tried to make that World Tabasco Day).
I gave up to***co in 1984 so it doesn’t worry me but if are rolling an after dinner number remember No To***co = No Spin.

So much rain. I have a clothesline full of flags waiting for the sun to come out.
Monday we celebrated PNGs Independence Day and Tuesday was Independence Day for the Dominican Republic. Today is Finnish Culture Day so we have Finland’s flag up.
No country that I know of is silly enough to have their national holiday on Feb 29 so I will find something else to put up.
Friday 1st is St David’s Day so we will have the Welsh flag up. The day is a bit like St Patrick’s Day but instead of drinking, they eat (vegetarian only).
Saturday 2 is Peasants Day in Myanmar
Sunday 3 is Bulgaria’s Liberation Day (from the Ottoman Empire)
Monday 4 is National Safety Day in India
Tuesday 5 is Chief’s Day for Vanuatu
Wednesday 6 Ghana’s Independence Day
Thursday 7 is Germany’s Equal Pay Day
Friday is International Women’s Day and as Bulgaria has made it a holiday to replace Mothers Day, the Bulgarian flag will go back up.
As a registered Australian Flag Marshal, I get emails advising when and how to fly the Australian flag. This week I was advised the Australian flag should fly at half mast to honour the death of Namibia’s president, Dr Hage Geingob. These instructions are only compulsory on government buildings and flag poles. I choose to fly international flags and only fly the Australian flag on Australia Day unless there is the death of a significant Australian person.

Last week’s flags were:
Thursday 15 Serbia Statehood Day
Friday 16 Lithuania Independence Day
Saturday 17 Kosovo Independence Day
Sunday 18 Gambia Independence Day
Monday 19 Canada Family Day
An interesting holiday so mum and dad can spend a day at home with the kids. Unfortunately politics and big business are not very supportive and only happens in some Canadian states.
Today Tuesday is Malaysia’s Independence Declaration Day
Coming up:
Feb 21 Bhutan King’s Birthday
Feb 22 St Lucia. Independence Day
Feb 23 Guyana Republic Day
Feb 24 Estonia Independence Day
Feb 25 Kuwait National Day

It’s still too wet to open the stall so we had to eat all the mangoes and dragon fruits ourselves.

Last week’s flags had a few people guessing beginning with one of my favourite new age flags, the flag of Nauru that first flew in 1968.
Thursday was the Mauritius flag celebrating the abolition of slavery on all British colonies.
Friday was the Earth flag in support of World Wetlands Day.
Saturday was Japan’s flag for the Festival of Setsubun.
Sunday saw the Sri Lankan flag for their Independence Day.
Monday was the Mexican flag on Mexico’s Constitution Day.
Finally Tuesday was New Zealand’s Waitangi Day for which we prefer to fly the NZ Māori flag rather then the tired old boring one that most people mistake for the Australian flag.
Today (Wednesday) Grenada’s Independence Day so their colourful flag is up.
Coming up :
Thursday 8th - Vietnam New Year
Friday 9th - Mongolia New Year
Saturday 10th - Chinese New Year
Sunday 11th - Japan Foundation Day
Monday 12th - Brazil Carnivale
Tuesday 13th - Qatar National Sports Day
And don’t forget Wednesday 14th - Valentine’s Day.
I am keeping the stall closed until the monsoon trough slips north again to avoid damage to our road and road verge in the wet weather.

Happy ‘James Leonard Tagle Gordon Day’.
It’s a public holiday in some parts of the Phillipines and that why we are flying their flag.
Over the last week we have flown the India flag for World Hindi Day, the Bhutan flag for their Day of Offering and the USA flag for Martin Luther King Jr Day.
Saturday 20th is the start of the Great Australian Beer Festival held in Geelong. I’ll be flying the Beer flag as well as drinking a couple.
Other flag days
Sun 21st Dominican Republic Lady of Altagracia
Mon 22nd Day of Hungarian Culture Day
Wed 24th Romania Unification Day
Thu 25th Scotland’s Burns Night
And of course Friday the 26th is our own Australia Day and we will definitely be flying our flag.

Happy New Year!
Over the last couple of weeks we have flown the flag of Qatar for their National Day, the Christmas flag, Mongolia’s flag on their day 29th December, the New Year flag and today it’s Canada’s lovely Maple leaf flag.
In 2022 a young indigenous Canadian girl, Isabella Kulak wore the traditional ribbon skirt to school and was told by staff it was unacceptable. This prompted a national movement that resulted in declaring a national holiday to be known as National Ribbon Skirt Day and was celebrated for the first time on January 4th 2023. So today Jan 4th 2024 we are flying the Canadian flag in support.
Up coming flag days:
Jan 5th Myanmar Independence Day.
Jan 6th Syd Barrett’s (Pink Floyd) birthday.
Jan 7th Italy’s National Flag Day (Tricolour Day).
Jan 8th Elvis Presley’s Birthday.

Wow. Facebook changes have made me lose contact with this page. I have finally got it back and apologise for not keeping things up to date .
We have flown the Mongolian flag for Mongolian Proclamation Day, 5 o’clock somewhere flag for the fantastic Jimmy Buffet show, the USA flag for thanksgiving and others that I don’t remember.
We are currently flying the Scotland Flag for St Andrew’s Day. This is Scotland’s equivalent of Ireland’s St Patrick’s Day.
On Friday we will fly the Romanian Flag for their National day and Saturday will see the United Arab Emirates flag for their big day.
In our stall’s shade house we have tripled the range of succulents and they are selling well. Most people have gone with the 3 for $20 offer.
We also have limited offers of pumpkin, eggs, bananas, fruit trees and last but not least our delicious Dryander Honey. This latest batch is very dark, thick and unbelievably good.
Cheers till next time…..Willow.
