"LANDOWNERS NEED TO BE PART OF THE CONVERSATION

There is another reason Mount Cotton landowners should be paying close attention to major development proposals.

Queensland has just introduced new laws giving the State additional powers for projects declared β€œState strategic projects” β€” including, in certain circumstances, compulsory acquisition of privately owned land.

Importantly, we are not saying these powers apply to the current Mount Cotton proposal, or that anyone's land is going to be compulsorily acquired.

But the legislation demonstrates just how important the early stages of major planning decisions can be.

Under the new framework, qualifying State strategic projects can potentially access compulsory acquisition processes, including where rights or interests in acquired land would ultimately be conferred on someone other than the State or a local authority. There are criteria and processes that must occur before this can happen, including attempts at commercial negotiation and compensation requirements.

For Mount Cotton landowners, the message is simple:

Don't wait until decisions are made to start asking questions.

If major changes to the future of our area are being considered, affected landowners deserve to know about them, understand the implications and have a meaningful voice before the planning framework changes.
