✨ Volunteer Spotlight: Meet Ayala! ✨
This week, we are shining a bright light on Ayala, our fantastic General Committee Member and Market Day Co-Ordinator!
🌍 A Lifelong Love for Agriculture & Travel
Ayala’s deep connection to agriculture began in her childhood. With a biochemist for a father, her younger years were filled with global adventures, travelling frequently to Thailand, the USA, and Israel.
That same travel bug eventually brought Ayala, her husband, and their children to Australia in 2003. Settling into the local area, the family began volunteering at the Elizabeth Bridge Reserve in Kilsyth. Guided by her passion for growing vegetables, building community, and enjoying a good workout, Ayala found her way to the Mooroolbark Community Garden during its very infancy.
🌿 Visions of a Sensory & Healing Space
For Ayala, the true joy of the garden comes from meeting lovely people who share her passion for nature. Her absolute favourite part of the garden is the green space. She sees incredible potential for it to become a true healing hub—a place where the community can come together for Tai Chi, plant therapy, and meditation. Ayala envisions it as a "sensory place" where people can feed their minds and souls, perhaps even walking barefoot through the thyme and chamomile.
🍆 Ayala’s Favourites
• Favourite Veg: Eggplant (because it is so incredibly versatile!)
• Favourite Fruit: Figs (and she proudly boasts that she has her very own fig tree at home!)
• Favourite Music: Blues and Jazz 🎶
🎨 Beyond the Garden Beds
When she isn't coordinating our busy market days, Ayala is a qualified, semi-retired Social Worker who also runs wonderful art therapy classes. In her downtime, she adores spending hours in her own home garden, watching how the landscape changes over the seasons and years, and always planning her next big project.
👋 Say Hello!
Ayala is at the garden every Monday and Wednesday morning. Next time you see her around the beds or managing a market day, be sure to say a big hello and thank her for everything she does!
