Our floral cupcakes and edible florals for Palmwoods Harvest Swap 🌸

How quickly a few strategically placed edible flowers can elevate and transform something normal into something so cheerful and fun.

What a beautiful harvest swap today! We brought in the cupcakes (vanilla raspberry cupcakes with vanilla buttercream), edible flowers, potatoes, heirloom tomatoes, some mulberry tree seedlings, passionfruit seedlings, and about 100 breakfast radishes… Left with strawberry runners, a candy melon seedling, some jaboticaba fruit, a stinging nettle plant and a beautiful bunch of roses for our dining table vase!

Honk & Tonk 🪿

Finally out exploring the paddocks after spending their first 10 days hanging out in our little holding yard getting used to us. This beautiful bonded pair are the newest little friends to join us…

Unlike ducks, geese are natural grazers, feeding predominantly on grass more like sheep... They’re wonderful little lawnmowers, helping manage pasture growth while naturally fertilising the soil as they go. 🌱

One of our salad green beds, just 10 days after we shared it looking rather bare and just freshly seeded!

A beautiful example of the growing conditions we’ve been enjoying lately - but weather is only part of the equation. Healthy plants start with healthy soil.

We’re fortunate to have naturally rich soil here in Kureelpa, but we still continually enrich it with homemade compost, manure, potash and even aquatic weeds from our dam, all working together to build nutrient-rich, living soil… Feed the soil, and the soil will feed us.

Our beautiful sunflowers grew to almost 9ft tall this season, and we had hoped to let them fully mature so we could save plenty of seed for next planting.

Unfortunately, this week’s storms had other plans and absolutely decimated them before they were ready… We’ve still harvested all the seed heads to add to our chickens’ feed, cut the leaves for composting and the huge stalks will be dried out and used as kindling - They’ve been a huge source of happiness for not only us but our wonderful bees and they’ll still serve a purpose right to the very end. 🌻🐝

While most people’s weekend gardening might consist of planting a couple of seedlings… we went a little bigger this past weekend… 16 dragonfruit cacti, 10 macadamia trees, a whole row of raspberries complete with a new trellis, and another 5 elderberry bushes - all successfully in the ground 🙌🏼

And on a completely unrelated note, our slow-steeped comfrey oil is now ready for purchase… and has already proven very useful for sore muscles and gardening-induced strains 🫣

A big thank you to Forgotten Artisan Living for having us out for a walk through, garden chat and produce swap this week!

One of my favourite parts of this lifestyle has been finding and connecting with others doing the same; growing food, raising animals, swapping produce and getting back to knowing where our food actually comes from.

There’s something so incredible about sharing knowledge, skills and abundance with people who just get it! 🌱 meeting baby goats are a wonderful bonus 🐐

No eggs this week! 🍳

Our ladies have been taking a little “Spring Break” from laying. Spring weather brings a big surge in natural hormones, and apparently last week our girls all decided that motherhood sounds much more appealing than laying eggs right now.

We’re giving them a little time to reset naturally, and hopefully we’ll be back to full egg baskets soon!

Our garden is absolutely bursting with colourful edible flowers 🌸

They’re such a simple way to completely elevate salads, grazing platters, cakes, desserts, cocktails/mocktails or even just a pretty dinner plate.

$10 per box minimum 25 flowers per box

Each box is a colourful mix of what’s flowering in the garden and may include nasturtiums, dianthus, violas, pansies, calendula, snapdragons, alyssum, coriander flowers and more in shades of white, pink, purple, blue, yellow, orange and deep red.

Freshly picked from our garden and able to be stored in the fridge and last up to 7 days… Every box will be a little different depending on what Mother Nature has ready for us that day.

As always, spray free, organically grown, & rain watered.

Spring Garden Reset 🌱

Winter is well and truly behind us. Most of our winter-loving crops have wilted away, or been pulled and chopped up back into compost, ready to feed the next season of growth leaving beds looking a little bare again, but our spring seeds are finally starting to pop up and tiny new seedlings are appearing everywhere like a little reset button.

What’s your favourite thing to plant in spring? I’m always looking for an excuse to squeeze just one more thing into the garden 😅

A little love for our bees… 🐝

Bees play such an important role in our gardens, orchards and food system, and right now supporting local beekeepers has become more important than ever - with Varroa mite now widespread in SEQ, keeping healthy hives comes with increased monitoring, treatment and management time, add in quality control, equipment and our choice to use sustainable glass jars… producing genuine local honey simply costs more than it once did 🍯

So you may have noticed local honey prices creeping up, but please keep supporting your local beekeepers, garden groups and small honey producers wherever you can.

We absolutely adore our bees and love watching them work their way through our gardens, the beautiful honey they give us really is just a sweet bonus.
