Today, we celebrate 'International Day of Rural Women: The Rise of Rural Women'.
Iโm thinking of the rural women who show up for their communities every day. Many of them do incredible things quietly, without recognition, simply because they care and believe their community is worth giving their time, knowledge and heart to.
Rural women come in all forms. There isnโt one way to describe us, and there isnโt one path we follow. Our stories, work and contributions are different, but every one of them matters. My own journey as a beekeeper has taken me from the field apiary to classrooms and community centres, and, in 2019, to the main stage at Parliament House in Canberra. I still remember leaving my beesuit behind in the apiary and stepping out in a blue sequined gala dress and my faithful pink Sketchers.. Iconic..!! ๐ฉฐ๐ฉท
That photo still means so much to me. It captures a moment I never expected, but it also captures who I am: a beekeeper, a rural woman, and someone who wants to stay true to herself wherever the journey leads. I hope that by being unapologetically me, I can encourage another woman to believe that she belongs, that her story matters, and that she doesnโt have to change who she is to make a difference.
To every rural woman doing amazing things in her community: I see you, and I celebrate you. We rise together, and when we support one another, our communities and industries grow stronger.
If youโre a rural woman with an idea, a project or a passion for making a difference, I encourage you to apply for the 2027 AgriFutures Rural Womenโs Award. Your story might be exactly the one someone else needs to hear. Queensland applications close 4 November 2026.
