Anyone else see the 60 Minutes episode on Sunday and then go and look suspiciously at their pantry?
Nobody knows for sure how much harm microplastics do. Australia’s Academy of Health and Medical Sciences looked at it properly earlier in the year and their answer was basically “we can’t say yet” and recommend a precautionary approach.
What we do know is where a lot of it comes from. Packaging. And that’s the bit that got our attention. There’s a study that measured what happens when you just open a packet. Up to 250 plastic particles per centimetre are released. Just from opening it!
Don’t panic, you don’t need to rethink your entire pantry. Just fewer packets where it’s easy.
And we’ll be honest, some of our stock turns up in 25kg sacks made from plastic. It’s impossible to avoid 100% of the time. But thats one packet, opened once, instead of hundreds of individual packets opened at home.
Bring your jars along, we’ll weigh them so you only pay for what goes in. Or grab one of our paper bags and fill your jars at home. Easy.
