Organisers said the event was a “creative act of defiance” against “censorship and the criminalisation” of Palestine solidarity in Queensland.

“They ban speech and dissent. We walk, run, stroll and have fun while defending our right to protest in the streets and in court” said Remah Naji, one of the fun run organisers.

Nick Everett from Friends of Palestine WA said the turnout over the weekend reflected growing concerns about restrictions on pro-Palestine expression.

“We’re sending a message to the Queensland government – and all governments – that people across Australia reject this dangerous political oppression,” he said.

Market Day Reflections:

While our wonderful team takes a well-deserved break, here are some highlights some of our stalls:

At this market: We raised just over $300 – thanks to for a generous tip (and a friendly reminder that it’s someone else’s turn next time 🙂). Plants, clothes, bags, and bookmarks continue to be steady sellers.

The real wins: The conversations made all the difference. We connected with activists from Northern Rivers who are passionate about Palestine – they loved our bookmarks so much they want to stock them and fold them into their own fundraising efforts, with the possibility of ongoing donations. We swapped numbers and can’t wait to stay in touch.

Another highlight: a local bookclub member who visits the market regularly wants to use our bookmarks for her club. Even better, she’s chosen us as her birthday cause this year and plans to ask her friends to donate.

This is exactly what we hoped the bookmarks would do – spark conversations, build connections, and open doors to longer-term support. It’s when people hear our stories and learn about the families we support that the magic happens. Those deeper chats make all the difference.

Special mention: to the kora player from West Africa who set up next to us – his beautiful music created such a warm, welcoming vibe that it naturally drew more people our way.
