Hungry Earth Agroecology We endeavour to pair primary-production with ecological regeneration; providing the alternative

For many years Hungry Earth sold Veggies Boxes (of which we grew everything), but never ran a true CSA - in that we never took a seasonal subscription and commitment upfront. Next week growingculture.aus kicks off its first CSA. Perhaps the first one in the since Joel Orchard of Future Feeders, now Young Farmers Connect did his last one over a decade ago.
It was always the plan to formalise into a CSA structure, but after having our first child and then things not progressing expediently enough to buy out the farm business that we were running under a licence to operate; our little family bought a caravan, hit the road, and left the soil and climate of the Northern Rivers which I had been farming in for nearly a decade.
I was a fair bit heartbroken not to be in relationship to the bioregion, soil and community which I had built such a connection with.
But alas, I persisted in my dedication to building a growing local food system, and through continued collaboration with other landless farmers we are building an operation to do just that.
The Growing Culture team is busy-as farming, and doesn’t have much time at all for social media posts, but maybe when the farm is resourced enough we’ll have a bit more time to share. Corinna Greenhill is a founder of the entity and the main farmer in residence in the thick of her learning journey.
Please check out and consider subscribing to our initial little fortnightly (4-box over 8 week) CSA!

… Growing Local food systems and an empowerment of young farmers have always been a couple of the key objectives of my work.
I’m excited to announce that a couple landless farmers and myself are building a local food system actuator. Through this we plan on working through the varied and numerous challenges that stand in the way to a growing local food system.

For starters we are launching our first little fortnightly 8 week CSA (yes, a CSA is a subscription to our farmers* - all grown by a few landless farmers - nothing brought in) to provide the direct support and connection between the community and some landless farmers.
For now, check out the links on the growingculturefarm.aus account to look at the subscription and check out Corinna Greenhill as she is the primary farmer enabling the development of this social enterprise.

Companion planting 2.0 - “Syntropic” time space continuum framework as applied to veggie growing is all about layering crops in a bed over time, and ensuring they come out before the next, slower, crop starts coming into maturity and needing its space… if this bed weren’t a commercially productive bed, I’d put at least twice the number of crops layered in into it, but commercial production MUST achieve efficiency on management tasks like weeding and harvest.

This is part of Corinna’s Corinna Greenhill patch at our exciting project in Federal NSW where we are working on enabling more young farmers.

Building local a food system - was hard enough in recent bygone economic times…. Nowadays!?! Alas, a few landless farmers have persisted in their commitment to pull something together doing just that.

Hungry Earth’s has always had a distinct objective of gaining the capacity to build local food systems. This has, of course, been achieved through farming (on rented, farm-shared etc land) and immersing the business within the confines and harsh realities of the economy - for the better part of a decade in the Byron Shire.

While Evan from Hungry Earth has moved away from the region, he still believes in the possibility of a future where more of the regions wealth goes into the hands of empowered young farmers doing meaningful work nurturing land and community.

Luckily for everyone a budding young farmer has stepped up to the plate and proven her steadfast determination to build a working farm for a brighter and more locally fed community. Carry that torch Corinna! Corinna Greenhill

We’re putting a few last things together before we put it out to the community how they might be able to get involved or support us.
Until then you can find Corinna (or me tomorrow!) down at the Bangalow Farmers Market Byron Farmers Market (ps - Byron markets - Thank You!!! For the opportunity of the spot with the approvals list!)

Also thank you harvest team Grace 💌 and Taya Mikah !
