Don stepped out of retirement this week to attend his 23rd Annual Countrywide Conference in Brisbane πŸ“ Yesterday he joined 100+ members and countless suppliers at the Food Service Fair. It was an excellent event, with many new product lines on offer.

Doing business in the outback often means missing out on building in person relationships. Attending these events are integral to Ela-Mar, to meet with suppliers and likeminded food distributors from across Australia.

We’ve already saved our place for 2027! πŸ‘πŸ—πŸ§€

Shane Stewart, our friendly face behind the wheel of the delivery truck.

Shane first joined the Ela-Mar team back in 2000, and while he's come and gone a couple of times over the last 26 years, life has a way of bringing you back to a good thing. He stepped away for a period to focus on caring for his family, and returned in 2021 to pick up where he left off.

No two days look the same for Shane, which is exactly how he likes it. He'll tell you that being fit and knowing how to roll with a change of plans are the two most important things you can bring to the job.

His favourite part about the job is meeting customers and having a chinwag. Thankfully, Don never scared him off with his humour over the years, and they enjoyed laughing together before his retirement.

Shane isn't the biggest fan of delivering in the middle of winter or summer, because he's either freezing or melting. When he's not out on the road, Shane loves spending time with his family and is an avid PlayStation 5 gamer.

As for his favourite product at Ela-Mar, he's got a sweet tooth and loves buying a Mark's cake. He's lost count of how many he's bought over the years.

If you see Shane around, give him a wave!

Meet Daniel Gray.
Danny joined the team in 2015 as a delivery driver before working his way into a storesman position. After five years at Ela-Mar, he headed off to pursue a mining opportunity for 18 months and learnt a lot along the way, but was pulled back by the great culture and even better people.
What makes Danny's story a little special is that he's not the first Gray to call Ela-Mar home. His grandfather, Alby Gray, worked alongside Don and the team for over 20 years, making Danny a second-generation Ela-Mar family member in his own right.

Danny is a pretty laid-back guy who loves an Iced Coffee.
He will soon be heading off on paternity leave as he and his Fiance are expecting a baby, so congratulations to the both of them!
Don't worry though, he'll be back to take your order, answer your enquiries, and help you pick the best Beerenberg sauce for your taste buds.
For what it's worth, his personal recommendation is the Chipotle Ranch.

Ela-Mar's very own back-of-house admin, and stores (wo)man who always has the brightest smile.
Meet Rheearn Howard.

Rheearn has been a jack-of-all-trades at Ela-Mar since 2015, wearing many hats as the face of the supermarket, the admin backbone, and a storeswoman who knows the place inside and out.

By trade she is a hairdresser with over 26 years of experience, which should tell you everything you need to know about how hard she works. Her connection to Ela-Mar goes back much further than 2015 though. As young as eight years old, Rheearn was in the shop on Saturdays, helping to pack orders and attempting to serve customers, because Don believed in instilling a strong work ethic in his kids from an early age. It clearly stuck.

Over the last eleven years, she has loved working alongside her family, as well as the rest of the team, who have made it their mission to scare her on a daily basis. They hide around the warehouse and wait, because Rheearn has what can only be described as an uncanny scream, and apparently it never gets old.

Rheearn is a busy mum of three who occasionally brings her own young children into Ela-Mar.
She loves that the business is now part of their story too, just as it was part of hers growing up. If you need a cake recommendation, she is the one to speak to!

Griffin Robinson, better known as Griff. He is the third-generation General Manager and the next, much younger chapter in the Ela-Mar story.
He left school at 18 and stepped straight into a storesman position at Ela-Mar, after working weekends in the warehouse. Griff has fond memories of forklift rides and helping unload the occasional weeknight truck, from a young age.
Stepping into the leadership of a 60-year-old family business is not something Griff takes lightly. The weight of that legacy and the responsibility that comes with it has been his biggest challenge, but he's proud of the years spent working alongside his father and family to build Ela-Mar into what it is today.
One of his proudest moments has been implementing a 20,000-item inventory system alongside his sister, which has flowed on to creating online ordering for Ela-Mar customers (a new website is coming soon too!). Griff believes there is always room for change and with change comes growth. He enjoys learning new systems, tinkering with software, and has plans to add many new product lines in the coming months and years.
He's got big plans for Ela-Mar, and hopes that the business will continue growing to become a fourth-generation family business. Griff is already looking forward to celebrating Ela-Mar’s 100th birthday and will forever be proud of the hard yards his father and grandfather put in to build one of Broken Hill’s longest-standing family businesses.

Those of you who have shopped at Ela-Mar over the past 60 years would recognise Don (Robbo) Robinson.

Don was not always a chicken farmer or Managing Director. Long before that, he was digging worms on weekends to sell to mine workers, before joining Ela-Mar at 15. When his father Lloyd purchased a burnt-out piggery on Calcite Street in 1963, the family demolished it, rebuilt their home, and established the Ela-Mar chicken ranch. By night, Don was still hustling, fertilising lemon trees, harvesting worms, and eventually selling locally caught fish and yabbies through the shop.

Over 60 years, Don has navigated more business opportunities and challenges than most operators will ever see, alongside a team of long-serving staff who helped build what Ela-Mar is today. Special mention to Eddie Moore, Alby Gray, and Chooka Hunter for their years of dedication.

Two of his proudest moments: having all of his children work alongside him at some point, and more recently, handing over the management and operations to his son, Griffin.

Today, you may still see Don around, filling in while staff are on holidays or having a sticky beak to make sure everything's running smoothly. But for the past two years, he's been stepping back, easing toward retirement after an incredible 60 years building Ela-Mar, Broken Hill's outback supermarket and food distributor.
