🫒 OLIVE OIL ACADEMY #11 | Cooking Oil vs Finishing Oil

Same olive oil, different purpose. But does it really matter?

The truth is, quality extra virgin olive oil can be used for both cooking AND finishing. It’s all about choosing the right flavour for your dish.

For cooking:
Our First Harvest Koroneiki brings a beautifully robust, peppery flavour to roasted vegetables, sautéed dishes and everyday cooking.

For finishing:
Our Arbosana Below 25° offers a softer, more delicate flavour, perfect for drizzling over salads, seafood and fresh bread.

And for something a little different? Our whole-fruit pressed Lemon, Garlic and Chilli oils add an extra layer of flavour to your favourite dishes.

The takeaway? You don’t necessarily need separate oils for cooking and finishing. Just choose the flavour that complements your food.

Are you more of a cook-with-it or drizzle-on-top person?

A little taste of spring. 🌿

Longer days, fresh seasonal ingredients and simple meals shared around the table.

Sometimes, the best dishes don’t need much. Just beautiful produce, good company and a finishing drizzle of quality extra virgin olive oil.

From our robust First Harvest Koroneiki to our delicate Arbosana and whole-fruit pressed Lemon, Garlic and Chilli oils, there’s something for every spring table.

Locally grown, pressed in South Australia and made to be shared.

Where does your olive oil live? 🫒

If the answer is “right beside the stove”… this one is for you.

Extra virgin olive oil is sensitive to light, heat, oxygen and time, so where you keep your bottle can make a real difference to how well it retains its fresh aroma and flavour.

For most kitchens, the answer is surprisingly simple:

Keep it in a cool, dark cupboard or pantry, away from the cooktop, oven and direct sunlight. Keep the bottle properly closed between uses — and don’t save the good stuff forever.

Our oils are bottled in dark glass to help protect them from light, but good storage at home still matters.

The easiest rule to remember?

Cool. Dark. Closed.

Save this one for your kitchen cupboard.

Some bottles are for special occasions. This isn’t one of them. 🧄

Our Garlic Press is made for the nights when you want dinner to be easy but still taste like you made an effort.

A drizzle through pasta, over vegetables before roasting, or over a finished meal when it needs that little something extra — simple, quick and genuinely useful.

This is exactly the kind of bottle that earns a permanent spot on the bench.

How are you using Garlic Press at the moment?

Does olive oil actually expire? 🫒

Not quite in the way you might think.

A best-before date is primarily about quality. Olive oil doesn’t suddenly change the day that date arrives — instead, its freshness gradually declines over time.

Exposure to light, heat and oxygen causes oxidation, which means those fresh aromas, fruity flavours, bitterness and peppery characteristics can slowly fade.

That’s why we think the harvest date is worth paying attention to as well.

Our current Adelaide Hills Harvest oils are from the 2026 harvest, so you know exactly which season is in your bottle.

And once you’ve brought a good bottle home? Keep it away from direct light and heat, close it properly after use and — most importantly — actually enjoy it.

Good EVOO isn’t something to save forever.

Save this post for the next time you’re checking the olive oil shelf.

🍋 SILVER FOR LEMON PRESS 🥈

We’re incredibly proud to share that our Lemon Press Extra Virgin Olive Oil has been awarded Silver at the 2026 Australian Food Awards, recognised in the Flavoured Olive Oil class.

Made by pressing fresh lemons together with olives, our Lemon Press has always been one of those bottles we absolutely love — bright, fresh and beautifully simple.

To see it recognised alongside some incredible Australian producers is such a special moment for our little family business.

And with First Harvest also taking home Silver, we’re feeling pretty proud of our two award winners this year. 🫒🍋

Thank you, as always, for supporting Adelaide Hills Harvest. It genuinely means so much to us.

Spring entertaining, made simple 🍋

Creamy homemade hummus finished with our Lemon Press — fresh, bright and ridiculously easy to make.

Our Lemon Press is made by pressing fresh lemons with the olives, so that beautiful citrus flavour is already right there in the oil. A generous pour through the hummus (and another over the top, obviously) does most of the work.

Serve with warm pita, crusty bread or fresh veggies and put it straight in the middle of the table.

Save this one for your next spring spread 🌿

Spring has arrived in the Adelaide Hills 🌿🤍

A new season of lighter meals, fresh produce, long lunches and plenty of good olive oil around the table.

While harvest might be behind us, things don’t exactly slow down — we’re still bottling, packing and sending your orders, one box at a time.

Here’s to longer days, fresh flavours and more time shared around the table. 🍋

Happy spring from our little family business to yours.

Another Silver for our 2026 First Harvest. 🥈🫒

We’re incredibly proud to share that our First Harvest Koroneiki has been awarded Silver at the 2026 Australian International Olive Awards.

The judges described an aromatic oil with notes of cut grass, green banana, celery, green capsicum and cucumber, followed by olive leaf, tea leaf and white pepper on the palate — with good complexity, persistence and that lingering peppery finish we know and love.

Following our Silver at the 2026 Australian Food Awards, that now makes two Silver medals for our 2026 First Harvest. 🥈🥈

Two competitions. Two Silver medals. One very proud little family business.

Thank you, as always, for supporting Adelaide Hills Harvest and the people behind every bottle. 🤍

A little look at what happens behind every Adelaide Hills Harvest order. 🌿📦

Orders come in, bottles are filled, capped and labelled by hand, then carefully packed and sent on their way — or set aside ready for local pick-up.

It’s not a big production line. It’s a lot of little steps, mostly done by hand, one bottle (and one order) at a time.

There’s something pretty special about seeing an order come through and knowing exactly where it’s headed. 🤍

From our hands to your table.
