The story of coffee started far back in the 10th century in Ethiopia where people used to eat coffee beans for energy, then in the 15th century, the coffee traveled to Yemen where
earliest substantiated evidence of either coffee drinking or knowledge of the coffee tree glowed, then by the 16th century the coffee spread from Yamen to Middle East, South India, Persia, Turkey, Horn of Africa, Balkans, Italy and to the rest of Europe, to Indonesia and then to America. It was 1720 and French Naval Captain Gabriel de Clieu arrived into the Caribbean port of Martinique with 1 of the 3 tiny coffee seedlings that had survived the horrendous ordeal of storms, Gabriel had built what is believed to be the world’s first green house to protect the three seedlings from the sea water, and after most of the water rations were thrown overboard in a storm and the Frenchman shared his water ration with the coffee seedlings. Now Martinique owns the best agriculture environment for raising coffee trees which allowed it to produce the best quality of coffee beans in the world other than it helped to produce enormous volumes that gave it the ability to start spreading throughout the Caribbean, to Mexico, South and Central America. Today’s production of green coffee in Martinique is 25 tons from a cropped area of 30 ha with yield rate of 21,875 hectograms per ha.
