Ahead of the forcasted rain tonight and tomorrow, I am trying to get as much in the ground as possible today. This is asparagus. It kicked my @$$. I am still not 100% well and coughing interrupts the planting, but I am going slow and taking breaks.

We have made it through the first ice storm of 2026. We didn't cover everything, just the artichokes in the New Garden. It seems to have worked as they are nice and green underneath their buckets, totes, and trash cans.

The mustard, beet greens, kale, and chard are questionable. We will just wait and see if they recover.

The carrots, garlic, and arugula are fine as are the smaller artichokes in the Long Garden. Go figure.

We do have a lot of eggs as the chickens are just fine in this cold weather.

Caspian, Winston, and Clementine are warm and cozy in their little barn.

It is about to get really cold around here. Ice, sleet, snow, temperatures in the teens...depending on who you ask. We are preparing for the worst. The horses will be moved into the little barn with blankets if need be. At least for the old girl, Kallie, as she over 30 and skinny. The piggies have already made their beds, and the chickens have been buffered with hay. They also have heaters. All the water troughs have been filled should water be an issue, and we already made our feed run. We are deeply watering all the gardens, and plants in pots, will be moved to sheltered areas. Pipes have already been wrapped and covered. On Friday the Artichokes will be covered in row cover.

Bring it, Texas! And by bring it, I mean rain. 😏

So it is supposed to plunge to 26° at 3 a.m. tonight. We have been getting everyone fed, warm, and watered. We are covering pipes and faucets, but I spent a few minutes checking the gardens. Beets are finally ready! Potatoes maybe not so much. 🤔
To be fair, these are from 3 little potatoes from the grocery store that sprouted in the pantry this summer. I tucked them in a corner to see what would happen. I am going to replant them and see what happens.

Oh, and the chard is beautiful and ready, but it is too cold for me to stand at a farmer's market so they will just have to survive the cold...because I surely would not.

Now is the perfect time to plant fruit trees. I just filled in a row in our orchard with 7 June Gold peach trees, while the fur nuggets supervised. They made sure the holes were dug deep and the trees went in straight. Mack took his job very seriously by checking that every shovel full of dirt was properly sniffed

In Farming News: This unreasonably warm weather has helped move the next batch of crops along. The carrots, fenugreek, kale, garlic, and artichokes planted in the Long Garden are slowly making progress. The warm days have fooled the chickens into laying again, and helped the new flock of hens thrive. It won't be good for the fruit trees that need the cold, but we will worry about that later. For now we will enjoy the warmth and sunshine...and Caspian says hello.

P.S. We need rain, so if you could send some our way, that'd be great.

Happy New Year! Our front door is wide open to let the lovely winter sun in. Breakfast is Blackeyed Peas and Cabbage cooked in milk.

Vegan or Vegetarian Blackeyed Peas and Cabbage:
Saute one chopped onion in butter or avocado oil in a large saute pan.
Add 1 pound fresh, frozen, or canned, Blackeyed Peas
Add 3 cups vegetable broth and cook until most of the moisture is gone.
Add half a large chopped cabbage and stir.
Add 3 cups milk, or coconut milk if vegan
Cook until cabbage is soft.
Salt and pepper to taste.

When you get a sixth sense that says, "Don't let the chickens out today" you learn to listen. The stupid hawk (who took a chicken 2 weeks ago) was perched in the Mesquite tree over the chicken coop trying to figure out how to get in! They were all smart and hiding inside the henhouse. He flew off when I went outside, so he knows better.
