CultivarX

CultivarX CultivarX sells heirloom vegetable seedlings, grown from seeds that are crowdsourced from gardens ju We believe that these two concepts are inextricably linked.

Our Passion:
Enabling Home Gardeners’ to Grow a Broad Variety of Heirloom Vegetables

All too often we hear the refrain - I just can’t get this vegetable to grow in my garden! We can check plant hardiness zones or buy seeds and seedlings from local nurseries, but sometimes these efforts are not enough. Seeds today are selected to maximize profits and bred in specific locations under tightly contr

olled conditions, and even ‘local’ seeds and seedlings are produced far away. Seeds and Seedlings have become a bulk-produced, static, and designed for single-use that give you reproducible results… for better or worse. CultivarX disrupts this model so that we can provide home gardeners with a different type of vegetable plant - a better, more-likely to thrive and flourish vegetable plant. CultivarX crowdsources open pollinated heirloom seeds from gardeners like you. By saving seeds at the end of the season, and replanting these seeds, we allow nature to adapt plants to their local environment, passing the better, more resilient genetic adaptation on to the next generation. Heirloom vegetables have enormous diversity and variety, and by fostering and preserving this innate capacity, we can select and grow seedlings that will grow into better vegetable plants in everyone's garden. Our Mission:
Improving Food Security and Promoting Biodiversity

Our mission is improving food security and promoting biodiversity. With greater biodiversity comes greater resilience of crops to tolerate and adapt to changing conditions, thus creating safer and stronger food supplies. Heirloom vegetables represent a great reserve of biodiversity that we can all access and promote from our own backyards. But there’s always a catch. The current structure of the commercial seed and seeding industry chooses to put a greater value on uniformity, and yield, at the expense of flavor, taste, and biodiversity. We find ourselves trapped in a model that treats seeds like single-use products, requiring us to go back to the commercial seed sellers to grow plants every year, and every year we get the exact offering of seeds. The system is largely static and stacked against heirlooms. We strive to preserve the vast assortment of locally-adapted seeds by collecting and propagating them into seedlings for the next season's gardens, so that home gardeners can benefit from the natural adaptation that leads to better vegetable plants.
