Friend’s birthday dinner this week and three of our greens ended up in the same bowl. Tokyo bekana, arugula, Muir lettuce. Radish sliced in for crunch, roasted beets on top.

Took us a while to figure this out ourselves. Don’t work through the greens one bag at a time. Mix them. Bekana is mild, arugula brings the pepper, lettuce holds it together. Three bags turn into one good salad instead of three things you feel guilty about.

Roasted beets over raw greens is worth knowing too. The warm ones wilt it just slightly.

Winter CSA starts Nov 25. Twenty weeks, Wednesdays, Virginia Beach and Chesapeake. Signups close Oct 31, link in bio.

My favorite time of year. W**d pressure is down, the bugs are slowly disappearing, and my favorite greens are starting to grow.
Spinach and Bolero carrots, both headed for the winter boxes.

The bees have taken over the basil that’s gone to flower. We left it standing for them.

Trellis netting up around the beans, the deer have been finding their way in.

And compost down and seed going into the winter tunnels. Spinach, tatsoi, mizuna, Tokyo bekana, claytonia, mâche. That’s what winter boxes are made of.

September is the month that decides February.

Everything that goes in your winter box was planted in the last four weeks. Here’s what went in the ground:

3½ beds of Bolero storage carrots — they get candy-sweet after the first frost
Three beds of spinach
Baby romaine, arugula, Hakurei turnips, radishes
Beets, rutabaga, scallions
Chard, kohlrabi, broccoli, kale, collards

Two new tunnels went up this week. Everything we plant in them from here — tatsoi, mizuna, Tokyo bekana, claytonia, mâche — is for the winter boxes.

After November 20 nothing grows much. What’s in the ground now is the season.

First box back after the August break. Lettuce, arugula, basil, peppers, eggplant, cucumbers, and two kinds of microgreens — pea shoots and radish, cut this morning, grown in sunshine.

Summer and fall in the same bag. The cucumbers are finishing up, but the fall greens are coming on strong behind them.

Winter CSA signups are open — 20 weeks starting November 25. Link in bio.

This is real local food, in season, from real soil. Summer harvests are coming soon 🍅🥒🫑 — but until then, this is what honest farming looks like. 👇 Quick tip: wherever you’re buying local, ask your farmer if they actually grew it on their farm — or if they ordered it in from out of town. It matters. PesticideFree EatLocal KnowYourFarmer

Would you look at that,… Romaine in the boxes this week and summer lettuce is making a comeback. I guess this broccoli never wants to produce this year. Cilantro and need to get on trellising and pruning these tomato plants. 🍅🥬🌱
