💪 Protein is having a moment. People of all ages are boosting their protein intake to support muscle, metabolism, and overall health. Our feature article in January went in depth on what protein is and why it matters.

But if you’re trying to mix things up or eat with heart and planet health in mind, plant-based proteins are a great way to add variety to your routine—especially during Earth Month.

🌾 Tofu – A complete protein packed with all nine essential amino acids. Try air-frying it for crispy edges or using it as an egg substitute.
🌾 Meatless “Chicken” Pieces – Mushroom-based options offer solid protein and a smaller carbon footprint.
🌾 Plant-Based Grounds – An easy swap for tacos, chili, pasta sauce, and more.
🌾 Plant-Based Jerky – A satisfying, protein-packed snack with bold flavors.
🌾 Seitan & Tempeh – Hearty, chewy proteins that pair well with your favorite sauces and dishes.

Meet the people starting your plants! Mark at Voss Organics and Randy at West Star Organics have been growing our seedlings locally for over 20 years. And, as their name implies, they are all organic.

You’ll see a few racks of plants at the front of our stores now, featuring hardier options like herbs, cold-tolerant vegetables, and flowers that can withstand cooler temperatures. It’s always a good idea to check the tag, though! As the weather warms, the racks—and the selection—will grow too. Tomatoes and peppers will arrive in late-April or early-May.

W***y Street Co-op staff pursue a number of methods to minimize the amount of food that goes into the landfill. Here are a few of the major ways:

🥫 Donating to food pantries and food banks.
🫘 Offering 500+ products in bulk.
🪱 Collecting scraps for composting.
🍇 Offering smaller amounts of most produce sold by the pound.
🍝 Using produce seconds for prepared foods.
🍌 Selling very ripe or slightly bruised produce at a steep discount.
🧀 Cheese niblets are small chunks of cheese that might otherwise be discarded.
🆓 Giving it to staff members via our employee "free box."
