Pyrus calleryana, or Callery pear, is a tree species from the pear genus of the rose family. Comes from China and Vietnam. Widespread in the USA. Lives up to 25 years. Belongs to the subgenus Pashia. It was obtained by breeding at the U. S. Plant Introduction Station (Maryland, USA) by Glenn Dale. It was brought to Europe in 1908.

The trees were introduced to the United States by the United States Department of Agriculture in Glendale, MD, as an ornamental landscape tree in the mid-1960s. They became popular among landscapers because they were inexpensive, transported well, and grew quickly. Lady Bird Johnson promoted the tree in 1966, planting it in downtown Washington, DC.

In much of North America, Caleri cultivars, especially 'Bradford', have been widely planted as ornamental trees. The species is tolerant to different soil types, drainage levels and soil acidity. Their crown shape varies from ovoid to elliptical, but can become asymmetric from limb loss due to excessive and unstable growth rates. The initial symmetry of several cultivars leads to their attempted use in areas such as industrial parks, streets, shopping malls and office parks. At the latitude of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the trees often stay green until mid-November, and the colors are often vivid in a warm fall, although they can freeze to paint in a cold year.

In the wild in Europe, the pear is distributed to approximately 60° north latitude. At the northern border of the range - rare.

By 2006, as a result of the successful selection of frost-resistant varieties, pears were effectively grown in garden plots located in the Urals and Western Siberia up to 55° N. w.

In the Far East of Russia, northeast China and Korea, a very cold-resistant type of pear grows - the Ussuri pear[9].

It is believed that the origin of cultivated varieties of pears is associated with the hybridization of a number of species, in particular Pyrus achras Gärtn., Pyrus persica Pers., Pyrus cordata Desv., Pyrus elaeagnifolia Pall.. Pears were cultivated in ancient Persia, Greece and the Roman Empire.

Currently, there are thousands of varieties of pears.

Pear buds, like other trees of the family, are of two types: vegetative and generative. Vegetative buds are smaller and sharper, generative buds are larger and duller. External differences between the two types of buds increase from the time of formation of these buds to the emergence of shoots from them.

Time and form of flowering: April-May, flowers are white, 3 cm in diameter, 5-petaled, 3-9 in umbellate racemes. There are from 2 to 5 pistils in the gynoecium. Their ovaries grow together and with the receptacle, which takes the shape of a mug; The petals in the bud are arranged tiled.

Fruit type: apple; its nests are lined with a dense membrane (intracarp).

The fruit, as a rule, is elongated with a widening at the bottom; there are varieties with spherical fruits. Pear fruits have a characteristic granular flesh due to the presence of stony cells (sclereids)

Trees of various sizes, sometimes large shrubs, sometimes equipped with thorns. With a taproot, weakly branching, penetrating deeply into the soil[6].

The shape of the crown of a free-growing tree is pyramidal or round, prone to thickening. The annual growth is 30-40 cm. Under favorable conditions, the pear reaches large sizes - up to 5-25 meters in height and 5 meters in crown diameter.

Leaves usually fall off. The leaf arrangement is spiral in 5 rows. The leaf is broadly ovate, 2.5–10 cm long, short-pointed; color - dark green, shiny, the underside of the leaf is bluish-green, golden-orange in autumn.
