Looking for a new bed?

After trying several different brands and materials, we have finally found the bed that works for us! And it has a great name: The Purple Mattress.

Why I'm recommending it:
I have had no allergic reactions to the mattress due to the safety measures used in making the beds. My husband's back pain has significantly improved. We aren't waking up hot.

Check it out!

(*Tip: if you order one, make sure your sheets are stretchy. The top layers you put on the bed drastically impact the way the bed sleeps.)

The biggest mattress-tech advancement in 80 years, and the only one to pass the Raw Egg Test! Purple now brings you the bed, pillow, seat cushions and more!

3 ways to plan for the (very) long term

Feeling overwhelmed and as though you're running on the hamster wheel with no exit strategy? After watching this TED Talk, I felt better: it reminded me that life is far more than the next day, next year, next 5 years. It left me feeling empowered and hopeful with the discussion of the future(s). If there's anyone else is inspired by it, and wants to practice it, message me. Maybe we can get together for tea to encourage each other.

https://www.ted.com/talks/ari_wallach_3_ways_to_plan_for_the_very_long_term

We increasingly make decisions based on short-term goals and gains -- an approach that makes the future more uncertain and less safe. How can we learn to think about and plan for a better future in the long term ... like, grandchildren-scale long term? Ari Wallach shares three tactics for thinking b...

Can a divided America heal?

The social scientist in me has been asking lots of questions in regards to the polarized election, and I stumbled on a very informative TED Talks that shed light on some of my questions. The basic themes of the talk are:

1. Why humans polarize/fight
2. How humans change over generations based on societal experiences
3. What we can do to overcome our political and social disgust

If you have questions about what "the other side" is thinking, then consider watching this 20 minute talk.....

How can the US recover after the negative, partisan presidential election of 2016? Social psychologist Jonathan Haidt studies the morals that form the basis of our political choices. In conversation with TED Curator Chris Anderson, he describes the patterns of thinking and historical causes that hav...

A Simple Gift Can Change The World

When the world seems a little overwhelming, and you're not quite sure if you can make a difference, remember the impact of kindness. It truly does make a difference in a person's world.

http://www.wimp.com/a-simple-gift-can-change-the-world/

Even though Christmas is over a month away, we here at Wimp believe it's never too early to celebrate the season of giving. This year, remember that it doesn't take a big, flashy gift to change someone's world.

A Chef's Life | Shows | PBS Food

Are you looking for a quality family show to watch as the weather turns colder? My family has thoroughly enjoyed watching Chef and the Farmer on the PBS channel on our Roku.

Each episode teaches how and where a food grows, how to cook it, and what a chef goes through to get it on your table at the restaurant. It covers all these topics in a very engaging way that leaves you wanting to become friends with Vivian because she shows how hard it is to be a working mom and a female chef.

A Chef's Life is a half-hour character-driven documentary and cooking series that takes viewers inside the life of Chef Vivian Howard.

Stop the Epipen Price Gouging

Many of you have heard me rant about the cost of Epi Pens over the past several years. It's hit the media and congress. If you have two minutes to spare, fill out this petition to help families not have to choose: do I fill the Epi Pen prescription that I may never use or do I feed my family?

I have plenty more to say about all this, but I'll just post the link for the petition:

Embrace the shake

A great reminder that our limitations can be our inspirations....

https://www.ted.com/talks/phil_hansen_embrace_the_shake?language=en

In art school, Phil Hansen developed an unruly tremor in his hand that kept him from creating the pointillist drawings he loved. Hansen was devastated, floating without a sense of purpose. Until a neurologist made a simple suggestion: embrace this limitation ... and transcend it.

Don't Do This When Bucking Up Your Children This Winter. It Could Be Fatal

I know it's a pain (truly, I did yet every time we got in and out of the car), but taking off an infant's jacket in the car really is important. This video doesn't spend a lot of time on it, but make sure the chest buckle is at armpit height, too.

When it comes to safety, we always want to make sure we put our children first. There are plenty of simple things you can do to make sure your kids avoid dangerous and sometimes deadly circumstances.

ARTIC MITT TOUCH SCREEN

After shoveling almost thirty inches of snow, I'm thrilled to recommend these gloves!!!! I ALWAYS have cold hands, but these gloves kept my hands warm and dry!!! They were worth every single penny. Since they are made for women, they aren't bulky, either. I bought mine at REI.

The Writing Revolution

There's a lot of talk about our education system. My primary complaint when teaching at a university was that incoming students couldn't write an essay or make an argument. A secondary school in New York noticed the same thing and determined that learning to write would improve overall academic performance.

http://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2012/10/the-writing-revolution/309090/

For years, nothing seemed capable of turning around New Dorp High School’s dismal performance—not firing bad teachers, not flashy education technology, not after-school programs. So, faced with closure, the school’s principal went all-in on a very specific curriculum reform, placing an overwhelming…

The First Year at School: Advice from a Food Allergy Mom

An acquaintance made a negative, off-the-cuff comment about kids being at school with food allergies. His comment stung.

If you're frustrated that you have been asked by your school to pack a lunch without tree nuts for your non-allergic kid, please consider taking a moment to think about the challenges of sending a kid with allergies into the lunch room and classroom at school.

This blog article accurately describes all the behind-the-scenes safety-work parents of kids with food allergies do before their kids even set foot in school, not to mention trying to pack a lunch their kids will eat.
