🐣🤎 Our last hatch of 2026 🤎🐣

There’s just something so bittersweet about wrapping up hatching season. From watching those little eggs develop, staying up waiting for pips, listening for the first little peeps, and cheering on every baby that makes it into the world, it’s been such a special experience for our family. 🥹🐥

We’ve had our fair share of excitement, surprises, stressful moments, and little victories along the way. Every hatch has brought something new, and watching our babies grow from tiny, wobbly little fluff balls into the birds they’re becoming has been so rewarding.

The kids have loved being part of it all, and honestly, some of our favorite memories this year have come from raising these little babies together. ❤️ There’s just something special about teaching your kids where life begins, how to care for animals, and the responsibility that comes with raising them.

As sad as it is to put the incubators up for the season, we’re so thankful for every little life we’ve had the privilege of helping into the world. Our farm wouldn’t be the same without all those tiny peeps, fluffy faces, and unforgettable moments.

Now we’ll spend the winter loving on the babies we’ve raised, growing our flock, planning for next season, and probably counting down the days until we can fire those incubators back up again. 😂🐣

Hatching season may be over, but the memories we made as a family will last a lifetime. 🤎🌾

Who else is already missing hatch season, or are you still sneaking in a few more hatches? 👀🐥

🚨🌱 KNOW YOUR FOOD. KNOW YOUR FARMER. TAKE BACK CONTROL. 🌱🚨

Lab-grown meat. Lab-grown milk. And now, lab-grown eggs. Does anyone else feel like we’re moving further and further away from where our food is supposed to come from?

Somewhere along the way, we’ve become so dependent on grocery stores and large corporations that many people have lost touch with the people, animals, and hard work behind the food on their tables.

And honestly, that worries me.

We watched the world navigate COVID, and we learned that even products recommended by health authorities can carry risks that deserve honest discussion and continued monitoring. COVID vaccines have been linked to certain rare but serious adverse reactions, and some people experience lasting complications. That doesn’t mean every medical recommendation is wrong, but it DOES mean we should never stop asking questions, demanding transparency, or expecting accountability.

So why wouldn’t we ask those same questions about the future of our food?

What do we know about the long-term effects of these new food technologies? What research has been done? Who is overseeing it? And will families have a real choice in what they buy and feed their children?

I’m not saying every new technology is automatically dangerous. I’m saying I don’t believe we should blindly accept everything we’re told is safe without asking questions.

And you know what? We still have another option. We can get back to our roots. ❤️

🥚 Buy your eggs from a local farmer.

🥛 Buy your milk and other products from local farms when available.

🥩 Know the person who raises your meat and how their animals are cared for.

🌱 Plant a garden, even if it’s just a few pots on your porch.

🐔 Raise your own chickens, quail, or other animals if you have the space and ability.

🥕 Learn to preserve food, save seeds, and become a little more self-sufficient.

🤝 Support the families in your community who are working hard to produce real food.

You don’t have to own 50 acres or live completely off-grid to make a difference. Start small. Buy a dozen eggs from a neighbor. Visit a farmers market. Plant a tomato. Learn a new skill. Every little bit helps.

When we support local farmers, we’re not just buying food. We’re supporting families, small businesses, animal husbandry, traditional skills, and a food system that we can see and understand.

And when we learn to raise even a little of our own food, we gain something incredibly valuable: more independence and more control over what goes on our family’s table.

I want my children to know that eggs come from chickens, milk comes from cows, and food doesn’t magically appear on a grocery store shelf. I want them to understand the value of hard work, caring for animals, growing things, and knowing where their food comes from.

We may not be able to control what large corporations develop or what new products enter the marketplace, but we can make intentional choices about what we support.

Buy local. Support your farmers. Raise your own food when you can. Teach your children where their food comes from.

We don’t have to wait for someone else to change the food system. We can start right in our own backyards. 🐓🌻🥚

🥚 There’s just something satisfying about collecting eggs! 🐔❤️

A handful of fresh eggs from our girls, each one a little different. Farm fresh, straight from the coop to our kitchen! 🥚🌱

🐦 Let’s talk QUAIL! 🐦

Quail are one of the fastest-growing birds you can raise on your homestead—and they can reach maturity in as little as 6 weeks! 🤯

These two are just 9 days apart, and look at the difference! 😍

🌱 Fast-growing
🏡 Space-friendly
🥚 Great for eggs & meat

And we currently have 15 baby quail looking for their new farm! 🐣❤️

Today I did something I never really thought I’d be able to do.

I butchered my first chicken.

And honestly… it was a lot harder emotionally than I expected.

When you raise chickens, it’s easy to get attached. You watch them grow from tiny, ridiculous little fluffballs into full-grown birds. You recognize their personalities. You know which ones are loud, which ones are friendly, and which ones act like they own the entire farm.

So standing there knowing that one of those chickens was going to become food for my family was… different.

There was no pretending it was anything other than what it was.

There were feathers. There was blood. There was a life that had to end.

And for the first time, I was the one responsible for making that happen.

But that’s also the reality of the life we’re choosing to build.

I don’t want to only experience the pretty parts of homesteading. I don’t want to post pictures of fresh eggs and baby chicks while pretending the food on our table magically appeared at the grocery store.

If we’re going to raise animals for meat, I want to understand the entire process.

Even the ugly parts.

Today wasn’t glamorous. It wasn’t easy. And I’m definitely not going to pretend I suddenly became an expert because I processed one chicken. 😂

But I did it.

My first chicken went from something I raised… to something I processed with my own hands… to food that will eventually feed my family.

And there’s something strangely humbling about that.

I think homesteading is teaching me that providing for your family isn’t always pretty.

Sometimes it’s planting seeds.

Sometimes it’s collecting eggs.

Sometimes it’s holding a newborn chick.

And sometimes…

it’s putting on gloves, taking a deep breath, and doing the hard thing.

Today was a first for me.

And as hard as it was, I’m proud that I did it. ❤️🐔🌱

Here’s to learning the ugly parts of homesteading right alongside the beautiful ones.

🎶🐓 WELCOME TO THE PHOENIX RUN FARM ROOSTER CHOIR 🐓🎶

Nobody:

Absolutely nobody:

Not even the sun:

🐓 Bernard: COCK-A-DOODLE-DOOOOO!
🐓 Frank: COCK-A-DOODLE-DOOOOO!
🐓 Randall: I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT WE’RE SINGING BUT I’M IN. 😂

Three roosters.
Three different pitches.
Three completely different ideas of what a song should sound like. 🤣

And somehow they ALL think they’re the lead singer. 🎤🐓

I’m pretty sure this is what happens when you give chickens too much confidence. 😂

Be honest… how many roosters is TOO MANY roosters? 👀👇

And if your chickens could form a band, what would you name it? 😂🎶

🎓🌱 A NEW CHAPTER IS ALREADY UNDERWAY! 🌱🎓

I’m excited to finally share something I’ve been working toward — I’m officially back in school! 📚

I’m currently taking classes toward my Associate’s Degree in Animal Science, with plans to transfer afterward and continue working toward my Bachelor’s Degree in Animal Science. 🐄🐓🐇🐖

For me, this is about so much more than a degree. It’s about taking the knowledge and experience I’ve gained from raising animals and building Phoenix Run Farm and combining it with a formal education in animal science.

There is always something new to learn when it comes to livestock, poultry, breeding, nutrition, genetics, animal health, and responsible husbandry. I want to continue expanding my knowledge so I can become better at what I do and build something even stronger here at the farm. 🌾

Balancing school, family, and a growing homestead is definitely going to be a challenge, but it’s one I’m excited to take on.

This is only the beginning. ❤️

📚 Associate’s Degree in Animal Science
➡️ Transfer to pursue my Bachelor’s Degree in Animal Science
🌱 Continue growing Phoenix Run Farm

I’m excited to see where this next chapter takes me — and I’m proud to finally be taking the steps toward my long-time goal of going back to school! ❤️

One class. One animal. One goal at a time. 🐓🎓🌾
