Today our Throwback Thursday is dedicated to "Dia de los Muertos" celebration organized by El Museo del Barrio in collaboration with Union Settlement at La Placita - La Marqueta.

We celebrated this 3,000-year-old Mexican tradition with a magnificent altar by Viajero. Live performances and art making workshops also helped make this event so special.

Do you know the faces behind the plants? 🤭🌿 Meet 𝗦𝗮𝗿𝗮 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗗𝗶𝗺𝗶𝘁𝗿𝗶 𝗚𝗮𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗮𝘀, the owners of Urban Garden Center LLC. The Gatanas family (including Dimitri’s father, Nick, and brother, Alex) have been in the NYC plant business for 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀! UGC found a home in East Harlem over 30 years ago and has been a neighborhood staple ever since.

“This is the community my family called home after they emigrated from Greece,” Dimitri says. “The idea that I get to work and basically live in the same community my mother and grandparents called home over the past 80 years is really something special to me.”

Dimitri’s favorite parts of running the garden center? The people, and the views.

“From private homes to well-known institutions, it is really such a great experience to see NYC from those perspectives. Being on multiple rooftops per day throughout this awesome city is probably worth its weight in gold. I get to do it as a job.”

Say hi if you run into either of these friendly faces on your greenhouse visit! 👋🏼

Limber are frozen juice cups originally from Puerto Rico, in February 4th,1928 a pilot names Charles A. Lindbergh the first pilot to fly across the Atlantic Ocean, flew to Puerto Rico. Coincidentally, happened to be his 26th birthday, and he was greeted with these frozen juice cups, since then the locals started to call them "Limber". (according to Caribbean Trading).

Locals in Puerto Rico say the proper way to eat one is by flipping it inside the cup, but a spoon will do just fine, for all those Limber rookies!

In honor of #HispanicHeritageMonth, we’re excited to highlight two of our Public Markets deeply rooted in Hispanic culture and cuisine – La Marqueta in East Harlem and The Moore Street Market "La Marqueta de Williamsburg" in East Williamsburg. ➡️ In 1936, Mayor Fiorella LaGuardia opened the Park Avenue Retail Market, previously an informal East Harlem gathering place for pushcart vendors and other merchants. From the 1930s to 1950s, the area became home to Puerto Rican, Dominican, Cuban, and Mexican immigrants – transforming East Harlem into the vibrant Spanish Harlem, or El Barrio – and the market into “La Marqueta.” Today, La Marqueta’s rich blend of community, culture, and cuisine continues to thrive in what has become one of the largest Latinx neighborhoods in NYC. ➡️ The only remaining market structure from Fiorella La Guardia’s tenure as NYC’s mayor, Moore Street, was opened in 1941 and continues to be a mainstay of East Williamsburg. Deeply rooted in Latino culture, the 15,000-square-foot-market is undergoing a $2.5M renovation, making it more vital today than ever before. Learn more and plan your visit today!
Directed by Belange Rodriguez, is "Who Killed Art", a mockumentary that questions, "who would want to kill the art?"... It could be the bureaucracy, paparazzi, a fame seeker, the mafia...Who knows? Join BIP for a social hour of intrigue and banter with the cast members (suspects) of "Who Killed Art?" followed by the private premier screening this Friday, August 27 at 7:00 PM Attendees will enjoy taking a stab (no pun intended) at guessing which of the cast members actually killed Art A. Leal, a highly esteemed renaissance man living amongst a community of artist. Your contribution will help advance BIP's mission and help support community performing arts projects. Contributors will also receive a comp coupon for one free drink and appetizer. Additional beverages and small plates will be for sale. The event proceeds will go towards supporting future BIP projects.
