Pig 'n' Whistle on 3rd

Pig 'n' Whistle on 3rd Every New Yorker's favorite Irish bar located in the heart of Midtown East. What is Pig and Whistle? There are several suggested origins. Most of these propose that the 'pig' part of the name derives from the name of a drinking vessel or container.
(310)

The names given are variously, 'peg' (a set of pins fixed at intervals in a drinking vessel), 'piggin' (a wooden drinking vessel or ladle), although most seem to have missed the rather more obvious 'pig' (an earthenware pot or pitcher). The 'whistle' element is harder to pin down. 'Wassail' has been suggested. This is the salutation used in toasting a person's health - the reply being 'drink-hail'

Dear friends, family, and patrons

The Pig & Whistle on 3rd has been an integral part of Midtown East Drinking and Dining scene for 4 decades. We were very sad to have had to close the doors last week. All of the team here at The Pig on 3rd have been missing all the loyal patrons and amazing people that visit us. Staff and customer alike have been feeling the effects of today's Covid 19 repercussions and social distancing. It has been a very trying couple of weeks for all of the staff here.

Please help support our staff with disaster relief that is currently unavailable to them. 100% of the proceeds will go to our staff. We have hope that this virus will be defeated. Until then stay strong, healthy and safe.

The owners have promised to mail out Pig & Whistle tee shirts to anyone who donates $25 or more (while stocks last).

A note from our owner, Ken McCoy: Mayor DeBlasio has rightly ordered all NYC restaurants to close. I’m very emotional right now. I’m not a closer, it’s against every instinct I have. However, our most valuable service towards the health and safety of our community and team is to temporarily close Pig N Whistle.

Let me tell you a story. In 2003 I lived on the upper east side. There was a snow storm one night. The city had been shut down since the afternoon. It was one of the worst storms I’d seen, snow was several feet high. I woke up early, around 6am. I knew if the snow stopped and they cleaned the local streets, all the tourists would go stir crazy and eventually come eat and drink. I walked down the middle of 3rd Avenue in the snow and got to the bar. It took me one hour.

I started to clean the toilets and worked my way through the restaurant to the front door. I kept calling all the scheduled staff. I encouraged and begged them to come to work. One by one they showed. Some deliveries didn’t. We started emergency menu v1. I saw my neighbor who owned the deli had a bread delivery, but he was closed. I remembered I had his home number, “Jimmy are you opening today? No. Ok. See you tomorrow.” I took Jimmy’s bread. Things were looking up.

By 2pm there wasn’t an empty seat in the house. People were patiently waiting as there weren’t many options as most places in the ‘hood were closed. I kept calling staff and more reinforcements arrived. By 7pm we were up to version 4 on the emergency menu and it was shrinking in size, but we were still going.

The atmosphere in the bar was electric all day. Such happiness. Genuinely grateful New Yorkers and tourists. The staff were crushing it. We had found more chopped meat at another market and some chicken breasts - burgers and chicken tenders were flying out. By 8pm the night manager had arrived and I had explained what he needed to know. It was slowing down.

I slipped away unnoticed after having clocked a 14 hour shift. I looked across the street and at some point during the day PJ Clarkes had opened. I decided I would have one cold beer. PJs was packed. I got a cold beer and went to the end of the raw bar by the front window. I looked across at the green awning of my pub and I felt satisfied. I’d hustled hard today. My partner would have been proud of me.

Just then, four people came through the crowd remarking to each other that “no way they would wait 90 minutes...even for a PJs burger.” I turned to them, smiled and said “I just had a delicious burger over there and only waited 10 minutes for a table” as I pointed to the green awning. I then watched them cross the street and head in the front door. I decided to order another beer.

When I finished I had consumed 5 beers and had sent at least 40 people across the street. I thanked the bartender, gave him a $50, told him to keep the change and walked back across the street. I went just a few feet inside the door. The night manager walked towards me and said “right after you left it started to fill up again, a steady flow of people.” I smiled thinking of my well spent $50.

That story is why I’m emotional. New Yorkers are hustlers. Restaurant workers are hustlers. My team members are hustlers. Whether you are cleaning toilets, slinging burgers in a hot kitchen, working with guests at the front, running with a tray of drinks and getting ready to split 5 checks. We are all hustling. So closing down and giving up is not what we do.

That’s why this is so difficult. But it’s also the only thing we can do. We have to be safe. I know we will be back. The day will come soon when we will put on our snow boots and get back out there and reopen this city. I’m counting the days. Whether it’s 9/11, a blackout, a snowstorm or a virus. We will be back. Until then, stay safe, be kind and listen to the smart people. [email protected]
