McKinleyville Street Art Project Coming Soon! 🎨
Many of you helped support the original Hiller Road Quickbuild Mural Project, which brought color and community pride to McKinleyville. Now we're moving into the next phase... the McKinleyville Community Street Art Project at the intersection of Hiller Road and McKinleyville Avenue, right outside our doors!
This next phase of murals will be bulb out murals.
What are bulb-out murals?
Bulb-out murals (also known as curb extension or bump-out murals) are artistic designs painted onto widened pedestrian areas at intersections. Beyond adding beauty and community character, they serve an important safety purpose. By visually narrowing the roadway, they encourage drivers to slow down, improve pedestrian visibility, and shorten crossing distances. They also help transform ordinary intersections into vibrant public spaces that reflect the culture, creativity, and identity of the community.
Communities across the country are using street art as a tool for placemaking, traffic calming, and creating safer, more welcoming streets for people walking, biking, rolling, and driving alike. We are excited to bring this next phase of community street art to McKinleyville!
We are so grateful to the McKinleyville Area Fund for awarding us a grant to support the next phase of this project. 🥳
The mural will feature an original Indigenous inspired design by Hoopa Tribal artist Sam Sam Edward Jones, painted by Sam alongside local muralist Ben Goulart (The Mural Man). The mural itself is funded entirely through the Mckinleyville Area Fund, community sponsorships and donations. We're working to raise the final $3,000 needed to pay the artists fairly and cover materials. Sea Goat is honored to be serving as fiscal sponsor and project coordinator.
